Indian State Government Sells Cannabis

3/24/06
The government of the Indian state of Punjab is in the wholesale cannabis business, the Times of India reported Monday. The state government sells bhang, an intoxicating preparation made from the leaves and flowers of the marijuana plant, known locally as "sukha."

The Times reported that next week, the state's Excise Department, which is responsible for allocating liquor licenses, will also allocate a wholesale "vend" of bhang in Hoshiapur district. The state government has set a price of about $7,000 US to a New Delhi vendor, a senior department official told the newspaper.

"We supply the bhang to Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and certain other states in the country," the bhang vendor told The Tribune on the phone from Delhi. "We have set up a huge infrastructure, including a cleansing system, to collect bhang from hemp plants in the Hoshiarpur belt and to supply it to MP, Rajasthan and other areas in the country", he added.

Cannabis is generally prohibited in most Indian states, but is commonly used in religious ceremonies such as the Holi festival in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and other states. It is also used for religious purposes in the Punjab. On the other hand, the Indian government's Narcotics Control Bureau has uprooted large tracts of marijuana plants in Kulu and Manali, where they are a favorite of foreign tourists, and has filed criminal charges against those found growing the herb illegally.

No word yet from the UN's International Narcotics Control Board.

AMEN to that one dude!
Savings of billions on the so called war on drugs.
Savings of billions, probably, on incarceration.
New job growth in stores, advertising, distribution, growers. Tax revenue!!
Taxes on the final product. Tax revenue!!

SOMEDAY they will dummy up the same way that they did with alchohol. I've been waiting for 30 years now....hopefully I'll be around to see it actually happen! If it were up to me they would legalize ALL drugs and leave it up to the wisdom of the people on how they should treat their bodies.....kind of like the womans right to decide what is done with her body in the abortion issue, why isn't it my right to make the same choices about my body concerning drugs?

That word, Bhang, sounded familiar. I was sure that Iā??d seen it in reference to this stuff before.

Heres a link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhang

Bhang is a derivative of the leaf and flower of a female cannabis plant. It is used for making beverages and sometimes is smoked. Certain erotic drawings from the Mughal period of India depict a couple copulating while smoking bhang to enhance their enjoyment.

Bhang Ki Thandai is a drink popular in many parts of North India which is made by mixing bhang with thandai, a drink prepared with a mixture of almonds, certain spices, milk and sugar. Cultivation of cannabis is illegal in many parts of the country, but bhang is widely available, and there is only a mild social stigma attached to drinking of Bhang Ki Thandai.

Bhang Lassi is another well-known drink made with bhang. Although it is rarely printed in menus, some restaurants in India and Thailand, predominantly the tourist attracting areas such as Rajasthan, serve Bhang Lassi; lassi, which is a yogurt and iced-water beverage, laced with bhang. It is commonly dubbed "special lassi".

The traditional harvest of cannabis and preparation of bhang coincides with celebrations of Holi in March and Baisakhi in April. It is believed that the traditional dance bhangra derives its name from bhang.
