Cleaning Glass Pipes
Firstly, this:
Second, I am suprised no one has mentioned white vinegar water? This is all I've ever used, it breaks down that resin like a charm and it just falls right off with the touch of a q-tip. Just let it soak for a few hours in a jar. That, and vinegar is less harsh and safer. I use it to clean all sorts of stuff.I see everyone saying to boil it. You dont have to in fact sometimes boiling a pipe, is too much thermal shock for the glass to quickly, and the pipe will break.

Well the good thing about Iso is it is a solvent and also polar, meaning it can clean and dissolve things that are not polar(things such as tar and such that water doesn't clean) but can also be cleaned by the water seeing as it too is polar. If I'm wrong, my B, but that's what I remember from Chem Class.

dont boil your pipe, thats the dumbest thing you can do especially if its a glass piece, it weakens the temper of the glass. which means they break easier. use rubbing alcohol(white vinegar works too), its cheap and wont hurt the piece in anyway. Be smart people you spend money on the stuff take care of it.
How to properly clean a glass piece or any piece for that matter:
1. Get a ziploc bag
2. put your piece in there with enough iso alcohol to cover it
3. let it sit in there for a while(really depends how bad the pipe is)
4. after a while shake the bag up
5. take pipe out and rinse it out with the hottest water your hands can stand
6. any leftover residue can be easily removed with pipe cleaner sticks or Q-tips
7. after its dry load it up and toke
8. dont listen to bad advice!!
anymre questions? ask someone with a clue.

I thought more mechanics smoked pot honestly but I have been searching the net and everyone says the same that alcohol and qtips. BULLSHIT! hit it with some brake clean available at any parts store. It completely discipates in a minute and rinses so clean u have never seen such a clean pipe. when ur done rinse with hot soap and water and thats it, u cleaned ur pipe with a half a $2.50 cent can of brakekleen and boy does it work omg spread the word I know I have been. everyone is loving me for this its awesome

the rubbing alcohol and salt procedure works GREAT; however DO NOT boil you pipes, It doesn't happen all the time, but boiling your pipe often makes it very brittle, the alcohol and salt should be enough to get it done. I haven't looked too much into it but the salt might also be leaving small scratches in the glass.

ask any lamp worker if salt makes scratches and they will usually say, probably but I am still waiting to see one. but if it does scratch there is always a flame polish which is part of the properties of how cool glass is. had to add borosilicate glass is extremely hard to scratch we use, diamond tools to scratch and scour them and even then it is a process. I don't thing salt is like diamonds.
