Because the USA respects the people's rights more than any other place.

How do you know the USA respects people's rights more than Sweden or Belgium or Japan or Canada? If you're comparing the US to some place like Saudi Arabia or North Korea, I'd have to agree with you, but you haven't convinced me that every other place on the globe respects people's rights less than we do. I haven't seen one international study of human rights or political freedom that places the US at the top of the list internationally. And I've actually bothered to look at this stuff.

I mean, come on, we're just under 300 years old.....and look what we have accomplished....give us another hundred years and the American flag will be on Mars......it makes my smile to think the U.S. will have its own planet someday!!!!:dance:

Err...you do realize that in Berkman's time, Belgium was being invaded by Germany and Japan was still under the iron fist of the emperor, don't you? Things are kind of different now.

You're trying to make the point that he came here because it was "freer" here. While that may have been the initial reason he came here, he quickly learned otherwise. If you actually read anything he wrote you'd know what he thought of the American government and "freedom".

In fact, he was so free that he was imprisoned when he started protesting the draft, and then the wonderful freedom-loving American government deported him back to Russia because of his political beliefs (remember that whole Red Scare thing?).

Very few educated people take anarchism seriously. Many could not even define the word. Berkman got want he deserved. My grant grandfather arrived at about the same time and started working(he was 14) in the coal mines of Penn. to help support his family. Berkman wanted to start trouble.
Many Americans expect a free ride. America is the greatest country in the history of man, because of the opportunities for advancements.
