The taste is so revolting that you temporarily loose awareness of balance, causing you to cringe and convulse. I think fkd1 had it right on the money. There are innumerable other compounds which you can smoke and use to get high. PCP, crack, meth, opium, Salvia, DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, tobacco, etc.
