Very simple, because 99.9% of us(me, included) are not known in the world, but if you were to say " I am American" that tells alot about who and what you represent. A big, bad 500 lb mother fu%cker of a big brother.
Nationalism allow the individual to be bigger than they could be by themselves. Besides even if someone sits on the "bench" and never plays in the game, it still grants him bragging rights --nobody likes to be on the losing team. I don't know if anyone's seen this, and it will probably make some anti-Americans angry, but someone sent me this. I like it...

As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan . Americans welcome the best of everything...the best p! roducts, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best services. But they also welcome the least.

The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty , welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America.

Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's ! been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including tho! se that aided and abetted the terrorists.

So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Ame! ricans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.

I'm just thankfull for what I have that's all. Not saying things can't be much better, but I've had a good life. I was blessed to grow up in an area low in crime, big communities of family and friends, good food, good times and good memories. There are countries where kids couldn't dream of having a life like I've had. I just try and not take it for granted. I also hope that with the birth of mass communication like the internet. Kids will have a better idea of what really goes on in the world and I beleive that when we all grow up and have the chance to make a difference, we'll be able to get the country right again.
