Shell still on Cotyledon

What will happen to a plant which has just sprouted and still has some of its seed shell on it??

I tried to remove it with a pair of tweezers with no sucess.
I was afraid of shocking the root system any more than I had so I just left it on hoping in a day or 2 it will fall off on its own.

What should I feed a newly sprouted seed?

First time growing my own...

The medium I have it in now is 1/2 potting soil and 1/2 perlite. It is under a 4ft 4bulb 40watts flourecent bulbs in a 5ft x 2.2ft x 6ft closet. I have the lights on a chain so I can easily raise or lower them. 2 bulbs are cool whites and 2 soft whites. Just to recap

Am I on the right track for my first grow.. And is ok for the shell to still be on the cotyledon

More update... I have noticed the the cotyledon with part of the shell on it is a little bigger and not as green as the smaller one.. The underside of the cotyledons meet the stem are a red purplish color.. Is this nomal??

Can anyone explain why this is happening and what should I do??

Leave it for a bit more, eventually the connection will break, and you will be able to pull it off. If it doesnt fall off, leave it another 2 days and have another go. The reason its not as green is because it hasnt had as much light. Good luck.

If it does not come off itself you want to take a razor blade on run it over the crack of the seed to make it easier to open up.

It will come alive and takes your firstborn. When you want it back you have to guess his name...

you don't want to squeeze it but rather separate with a sharp-ish instrument and another finger for bracing it in place while you very gently work the shell off by prodding and pushing...i've found the dull end of a sewing needle works well along with a sharp toothpick. it takes a gentle touch but with a little work they'll pop off.
