    a theory of mine

Wow dude... I wrote up a reply, and I turned off the computer... sorry, stoner part of the day.

Anyways, what I wrote, more or less, was:::

I read something like this a couple of months ago (probably on OverGrow)... it was an idea for switching ON/OFF your lights...

Say, you have a big area of plants, with 12 lights over them (2rows). Well, 1st stage you turn ON 6 lights... (3lights per side)... then, next stage, you turn ON the other 6 lights, and turn OFF your initial ones.

I don't know if it helped simulate "nature" or something... the general "thought" on the document was that it increased yields and saved some energy.

When I start using both of my bulbs (MH + HPS), I'm planning on doing something like that for the flowering 12/12 cycle... I thought of starting up both bulbs, for 2 hours... then, cycle them.

    Maybe this helps:::

    (12 hours total)
    2hr MH + HPS [total=2]
    1hr MH [total=3]
    1hr HPS [total=4]
    4hr MH + HPS [total=8]
    1hr HPS [total=9]
    1hr MH [total=10]
    2hr MH + HPS [total=12]

    What you think?

it sounds good but im the light im getting is switchable and you have to change the bulb to change the light but that sounds very intresting

    Oh, yeah... forgot to mention...

I've got both bulbs installed, and two ballasts. So, to turn each one ON or OFF, it's as simple as flipping a switch...

or just run an extra mogul base and hood then when it comes time just switch the plug at the ballast
    but it will cost more
or just get a hortilux bulb because they have the added spectrum and they work great

    a theory of mine

This thread reminds me of discussions I read in the 70s where people were using strobe lights for grow lights. Some used a single bulb, some varied colors. The theory was that the plants didn't know the difference between strobe and continuous light, it allowed you to add the red, it kept things cooler, and it should save $$ on electricity. Not to mention I suppose the psychedelic effect of the strobe lights on the growers . . .

Too bad I lost track of the discussion. Anyone else remember anything about strobe lights?

Now that you mention it, I think I read something like that (pulsating lights) over in one of the LED light growing links. Nothing, the researchers where doing just that... pulsating the lights....

Years ago there was discussion of using LED's set to a pulse rate of several cycles per second for 24/7 the thought was that the plants would be getting the same light and dark as a 12/12 but would also grow much bigger. You would probably just get big freakish hermies.

There was some actual research done on pulsing light being used to drastically increase yields with other types of plants. I'm too lazy to look for the article right now though, maybe Turtle knows where it is.

I'm going to try this when I have my LED rig built. Could be about a year before I have the flow to do it properly though.

FERMENT like your life depends on it... cause it does.

What is the advantage of alternating lamps if you have the capability to run both lamps together? I feel like having both on all the time is best, and turning one off will only reduce productivity.

Also, wouldn't repeatedly changing the light source cause stress on the plants and possibly cause hermaphrodism?

    peace
