I thought it was called the "methijuana" bill... whatever.

Anyhow, it's senseless to think any type of real legalization, even in one state, is anywhere CLOSE to being realistically possible. The Feds will turn their backs on a certain number of medical clinics in CA, but if stores in NV started growing and selling, there would be a few people thrown away for decades, and the example would be set. Even if the bill passes, it's all symbolic. You've gotta buy pot still from somewhere, right? There's a crime. Most pot smokers now use pipes. There's a crime they'll hit you with. Although steps in the right direction, these state and city initiative are really little more than good PR.

The trick would lie in a WIDESPREAD and intense public information campaign, or even mass civil disobedience, aimed at proving to people that marijuana doesn't harm people like the average American thinks it does. This is the reason few if any national polls show strong support for legalization, and sadly, it's the reason the Nevada initiative will likely fail to pass. Believe me, if we had 1,000 smokers in every major city who were willing to sit on the lawn of city hall, smoke a joint and get arrested, over and over again, the media would take notice, along with the masses, and eventually things would change.

You have to remember, there was a time when people in this country said there was no chance segregation would ever end. Public opinion means a hell of a lot in deciding public policy.
