FYI, leaves don't break down chloroplasts... the chlorophyll present in the chloroplasts is excited and the enegy used to drive ATP (energy) and NADPH synthesis.. If you put a plant in the dark for weeks it'll start breaking down the chlorophyll as it tries to get every bit of reserved energy.
