I don't think we *need* anything more than a window and a bag of dirt to grow a plant. I've cut a slit in the bag of potting soil as it comes from the store, added the seedling and water, and put it in the window. The plant grows. It might not grow fast, and might not finish, but it grows.

The fun of growing (for me anyway) is in understanding and applying the methods and technologies used by other successful growers to "enhance" the grow rate/hardiness/yield/potency/whatever of the strains I'm tinkering with. I love this forum for that reason -- I can absorb a lot of information, ask questions, and then launch my own "lab time" experiments into light cycles, nutrients, light types, atmospheric enrichment, etc. No, I don't "need" any of it any more than I "need" the fruits of my labor. But having acknowledged that, it's FUN to play with this stuff, and FUNFUNFUN to kick back and enjoy the results!
