I've never done it, but i used to hear about people doing this when I was a kid. they'd just dip in some whiskey for a couple seconds then take it out to dry.
I highly doubt he let it soak for 7 hours... if it didn't break or unravel already, it would have fallen apart in your hands when you tried to take it out
