    Check out my new cabinet...

It's a work in progress, but I think it's coming along nicely. I need to pick up some more plywood and I hate how expensive that stuff is ($30 per sheet, and I've already used 5 of them).

It's been fun building so far, especially considering I didn't start with any real plans. Just a few sketches, measuring 3 or 4 times, and an idea in my head.

    It's getting there!

Dimensions are roughly 9.5ft floor to ceiling, 2.75 feet deep, main section is 6.5feet wide. The section to the side is about 2.5-3ft wide and it's got a weird angle to the wall. That wall is where I will draw my fresh air from an inside closet (the closet built under the stairs).

Very nice! Post more pics as it comes along - it's fun to watch growing cabinets growing. I wish I had enough room for something like that, but at least I can get some vicarious enjoyment out of watching you build yours!

Anyone have any thoughts on whether or not I should split the cab in half? Horizontally I mean. I could have two chambers at about 4 feet each. I would have to grow small plants though, and I'm not sure if I want to do that. This construct is more about learning and experimentation, rather than production, though I wouldn't rule it out later.

Any ideas on what *you* guys/gals would do with my space?

ok, what would i do with that space if i split it horizontally, I'm assuming u have 8ft. of usable space. Hmmm, I'd split it 5 and 3 and use 4'flouros in the 3ft. part to veg and 2 400w hps in the 5' part. Splitting it vertically would be a whole other story in of itself, but if you want to keep it as simple as possible, then keep it as is and grow big plants.

Wow, I was just over on another board and had this same idea. Two sections, the veg flouro in the bottom, hid's in the top for flouro, and scrogging the whole thing with removeable screen/pot contraptions.

I'd then use the side area for scrubber and clones, maybe a mother.

Eh, keep it one big chamber for now and do a few grows of mongo plants, the kind few indoor people can grow at all. If that should ever get boring (can't see why it would), or production quantity becomes more important than quality and simplicity, then break it in two. The fewer compartments, the simpler the ventilation system too, which probably translates into less upfront expense.

And with the one big compartment, with so much height, I'd consider putting like 12 3-bulb bathroom fixtures in there (3 on the left, 3 on the right, and 2 columns of 3 each on the back wall). Then you could put some El Cheapo 26 watt CFLs in those, for an extra 936 watts of sidelighting. If you used 42 watt CFLs, that'd be an extra (*cough*) 1512 watts of sidelighting. And it wouldn't be like you'd have to use them all all the time - just unscrew bulbs until you have as much sidelighting as you want. Or, if you put each fixture on a switch, you could just click them on from the bottom up as the plant(s) grow. Home Depot has the fixtures for about 10 bucks each (just bought a few myself, for the same use). Of course, they do generate more heat, so you'd have to build your ventilation system with that in mind, but I think a 6" inline centrifugal would handle it fine if you kept a small circulation fan in each back corner to move air around and used a cooltube on your primary light(s).

I built a cabinet of the same size a few months ago, i realized later it was a big mistake when management wanted to "inspect" my apartment, ended up cutting it into three pieces and hauling it out. I then put it back together and yet another "inspection" a month later, if you live in an apartment where they can come in simply by giving you 24 hours notice, i wouldnt build the cabinet, if you're in a house then no worries. Ended up tearing the whole thing down, waste of money.
