Video has been obtained by a US news agency showing President George W Bush being briefed by officials on the eve of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
The confidential video obtained by the Associated Press shows very strong warnings being given to Mr Bush about the potential strength of the storm.

It appears to contradict subsequent suggestions by the Bush administration that the threat had been unclear.

Critics say more could have been done sooner to evacuate the city.

Speaking by video link from a room in his Texan holiday ranch on 28 August last year, Mr Bush is shown telling officials: â??We are fully prepared.â?�

He does not ask any questions as the situation is outlined to him.

Along with the video, AP obtained transcripts of seven days of briefings relating to Katrina.

Clear warning

The footage does the president no favours, the BBCâ??s Justin Webb reports from Washington.

It shows plainly worried officials telling Mr Bush very clearly before the storm hit that it could breach New Orleansâ?? flood barriers.

In the past, the president has said nobody anticipated a breach but the video shows Michael Brown, the top emergency response official who has since resigned, saying the storm would be â??a bad one, a big oneâ?�.

â??Weâ??re going to need everything that we can possibly muster, not only in this state and in the region, but the nation, to respond to this event,â?� Mr Brown says.

He also gives a strong, clear warning that evacuees in the Superdome in New Orleans could not be given proper assistance.

â??Very, very graveâ??

Another official, Max Mayfield of the National Hurricane Center, tells the final briefing that storm models predict minimal flooding inside New Orleans during the hurricane.

But he adds that the possibility of anticlockwise winds and storm surges could cause the levees at Lake Pontchartrain to be overrun afterwards is â??obviously a very, very grave concernâ?�.

His concern was borne out by events when levees collapsed, letting in the floodwater disastrously.

The president, however, said four days after the storm: â??I donâ??t think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees.â?�

Mr Bush later accepted he shared some of the responsibility for the flawed response to Katrina and the White House talked of the â??fog of Warâ?� rendering decision-making difficult.

Michael Brown told AP this week that he did not â??buy the â??fog of Warâ?? defenceâ?�.

â??It was a fog of bureaucracy,â?� he said.

You need to look at the other post here, AP has already been hammered over showing "bits and pieces" they wanted people to see, but they didnt know they werent the only people to get the Video, and when the FULL VIDEO was released, showing Gov Lady of LA telling Bush the Levees were fine and havent failed, AP went into Damage Control.

Yeah I'd seen this on the news and thought well it's going to be hard for bush to get out of this one it's just a sham really he should of evactuated those people out surely at least he would of done something instead of nothing.

It isn't his fault. He told the local and state leaders to act and they decided not too. I have to wonder why Florida handles these things so well and MS and LA didn't? Same FEMA etc...dif. local and state leaders.

It isn't the Feds job to protect us from ourselves. We can't have it both ways...we can't demand they stay out of our lives (drugs, sex, etc) and then demand they take care of our basic needs.

it's not his fault that he lied about the levees? it's not his fault that he didn't make sure the levees got fixed? :dance: fema is still a secret government by the way... it's just that now they're not completely secret.

LOL Bush didn't lie about the levee's, sorry. BTW the levees had been getting worked on for years. People have been warning us about this possibility for decades.
