for your first grows, I suggest "keep it simple" ... the whole key to great bud is 'patience' ... lots of time spent waiting for the plants to 'finish', then more time drying and curing (in my humble opinion, the most important phase) ... it will grow by itself, thats the easy part (remember, its a WEED) ... the old joke rings true ...
