Did anyone watch the history channel about an hour ago?

There was a special on the devil, but there was one part that stuck out to me...

They were talking about the book of Job, if you're not familiar with it, it goes like this, Satan makes a wager with God, Satan says that one of his followers, Job, will curse his name if tempted enough. God agrees, but only if Job isn't physically harmed. Satan then takes away all of his material possesions, and he kills Job's family before his own eyes. Job then curses God's name, but asks for forgiveness afterward.

Alright, now here's where things get hairy, they had a bible expert on, and she said that if bad things are done upon you, it is not God, but Satan, and that you can be assured no harm will be done upon you.
    Woahwhoahwoah, bring it back.

First, God agreed to it! Shouldn't it then be Satan AND God's fault?

Second, doesn't that blind faith that you won't be harmed sem kind of selfish? "Go ahead and kill my family, for I am sure that I will not be harmed." I would rather die myself than have my family killed.

Can anyone who is more enlightened enlighten me on this issue? I've never been religious, atheist nearly all my life, but I am very interested in religion for some reason, and when I heard this I was like "HUH?".

Unfortunatly I just had a HUGE explination with scrpiture and everything but just lost it because of some crappy error. Took me like 30 minutes to write but ill try to summerize. They got most of the story wrong, Satan had pretty much said that if God were to take Jobs possesions that Job would curse the Lord to his face. After this is done, Job didn't curse him. Then, Satan says that if you hurt his flesh then he will curse him to his face. Satan was then granted power once again and he smote Job with sore boils from head to toe. After all that, Job still didn't curse God. He did curse the day he was born. Still, the show got it wrong. After the bulk of the book of Job, which is mostly him trying to reason why things happen, he ends up with the same amount of children, and double all the animals he has lost. I dont know where they got this information but its just not in the bible. And the notion that bad things wont happen to believers who only do good is just false. Bad things happen to everyone. For being a "bible expert" she sure doesn't seem well versed...

It is a pretty simplistic idea and isn't actually supported by the bible. The idea that everything good is from God and bad is from satan that is...

I have a point to make.

Satan is the hebrew word for advocate ( in hebrew it's HaSatan, meaning "the advocate"). It is the Jewish belief, I believe, that accept satan as advocate and not devil-- that God has created satan for the specific purpose and role of advocate to humanity. Satan doesn't cause the evil, but he leads us away from God's word, as god has permitted, so that he might test us. Satan tempts us into wrong, he doesn't cause it. At least this is one point of view, and I think it puts a good spin on the traditional "evil" of Satan. Think of satan as a tool used by God, a mutual partnership if you will. God USES Satan to tempt humanity, and satan has the job of advocate (not torturous devil like christians tell you). I guess it could work.
Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
