I don't see the lyrics of this song being so much about living without possesions as it is about peace. Religion, heaven and hell, possessions, countries, etc. were just obstacles that were in the way of peace. And, as the title of the song suggests, he does realize that this dream is imaginary.

John Lennon did do quite a bit to promote peace in the years just before and after the Beatles break up. He also gave to charity and gave a number of charity concerts. Just because a person beleives in peace and wants to help the poor doesn't mean he should be poor himself.

But you're rigth psychocat, he wasn't the 2nd coming of Christ. He was just a man with an extraordinary talent for writing music that was spreading a message that was consistant with the times.
