From what I understand, the 1st Levi jeans were made out of "tarp"... tarp to make tents.

Levi Strauss [?] wanted to do a business selling tents to the gold diggers... and he headed West with shitloads of tarp rolls... but the market was overcrowded.

So, he made some jumpsuits (the ones with the straps over your shoulders, and the packets in your chest). The miners loved it... and so, it started...
