Malaysian Death Sentence for 2 Kilos of Pot

On February 15th an unemployed man was sentenced to death by the High Court of Malaysia after being found guilty of trafficking in 2,018.04 grams of cannabis six years ago.

Justice Datin Paduka Zaleha Zahari passed the verdict after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt on the prosecution's case.

Mohammad Abdullah, 31, who was wearing a grey t-shirt and blue jeans appeared calm in the dock when the sentence was passed.

Mohammad from Keramat, Kuala Lumpur, was alleged to have committed the offence at Jalan Jurutera Off Jalan Puchong near here at about 12.30 am on Dec 22, 2000.

He was charged under Section 39 B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and sentenced under Section 39B (2) of the same Act which carries the death penalty upon conviction.

The drugs were found in a bag on the front seat of the car driven by the accused.

Public Prosecutor Datin Nik Sarina Lugman Hashim appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by counsel K. A. Ramu.
