Kinky Friedman Has My Vote

I don't know if you all are following the '06 Campaign for Governer, but Kinky Friedman is my choice. I like his music too.

Good Point 56. He is for the legalization of Medical Marijuana....I'm sure he'd be up for full decriminalization, but hey, we've got to take one step at a time. He'll I don't know if he's joking or not, but he said he was going to appoint Willie Nelson to run the Texas Rangers.........Wow! If we could get every Stoner out to vote Kinky would win.:dance:

Hi guys. Oldhippy56, where does a person go to find such a petition? Funny how I am so politically aware, vote in every election, and speak openly to anyone who wants to discuss politics, but I have never been contacted by a politician or political party in over 20 years. The last time anyone contacted me was someone from the Gary Hart presidential campaign....then there was this boat issue.........speed boat, hot young girl, BIG MOUTH politician who dared the media to spy on him..........man, did THAT go up in flames!!!!

I have heard of petitions going around, but never have actually known anyone who signed one for Kinky.

Do you guys think he's just a whack job who people find funny, but don't take seriously? Or does he actually have some clue on issues such as funding education, securing the border, protecting the gulf ports, improving the infrastructure of the state, etc? I really haven't heard him speak much on serious subjects, just being a good old boy, smoking a big cigar, who is very funny.

Onward, This is a guy just like us.....he made a good life for himself and I think he wants to give something back......that he believes in.

Truth is, you or I could become Governer of the State of Texas. There are advisors for every issue. You just have to make decisions based on what you think is right.

Kinky was never Big Time in the music world, but he has also published some very successful novels. I really like his music, but have not yet read one of his novels.

Just my thoughts.

Because so few people in Texas actually vote (25-35% is considered exceptional voter turnout), if all the "independent" voters turn out for him, he could really have a good chance at winning...

If he does win, the big problem is that, in Texas, the Governor has about as much constitutional power as a bag of Cheetos. The Lieutenant Gov is actually substantially more powerful. The Lt Governor is elected independently of the Governor, and does not answer to him. Also, the Lt Governor presides over the legislature - he and the Speaker of the House can make life very difficult for any Governor that tries to push through "radical" legislation that steps on too many toes...

To get on the ballot, Kinky needs 45000 signatures on his petition, beginning Wednesday, March 8. He's gonna be on the Capitol steps in Austin at 12:01am Wednesday to be first to sign. I'm thinking I might go sign with him. Look for people out gathering signatures all over the state in the next few weeks.

If you voted in the primary that ends March 7, you can't sign his petition. But go ahead and sign Strayhorn's.
