Hello Swizzy , "Topping" or "Pinching" will increase the amount of bud.

The amount on each stem will be slightly less than a stem which hasn't been topped but when combined together the stems of a topped plant should be significantly more than an untopped plant. That's what I've found anyway

I copied this off an earlier post of mine ..............................
At the very top of you're plant there is the very freshest new growth just bellow the new growth were it joins the main stem that's were you cut it off.
However make sure that the cut is above the diagonal shoots growing from the node below
With the main stem cut off all additional growing will come from the two shoots bellow the cut, making two main stems to produce buds.
I've grown with and without pinching (topping) and have found that by having two main budding stems that it does increase the yeild quite a bit.

Also I call it pinching because that's how I do it, with my fingernails, but at first I would reccomend using a sharp pair of sisscors.
Whatever you do be carefull not to take any off the diagonal shoots that are going to be the new main stems
