how much do roots grow during flowering

hi my plants are 23cm tall very very thick and bushy.i noticed a glimpse of root peeking throught a hole in the bottom of the container , im not in flowering yet. will i have to repot or if i change to12/12 now will they be all right till the finish. the pots are short and wide like a shrub tub about 4 gallons.so do roots slow down thier growing when flowering or what, thanks for the help

No ,they practacly double the root size...they will fill all the space they can find!So I suggest transplanting before flower into double the size of that pot(10 gallons)...you do know that the plant grows double or more,hieght wise, in the firt two weeks of flower?Transplant and you'll end up with some huge plants and a fat yield...just hope the hieght isn't a problem.If it is may need to do alittle supercropping>If you leave it ,it will get root bound and die during flower!

hmmmm, I'm not sure that information is correct, Jdog.

First, I believe the plant "doubles in size" over the course of the entire flowering period, not the first 2 weeks.

Second, rootbound will not cause a plant to die.

It is common for roots to stick out the bottom of the container LONG before it is rootbound, because roots grow down the middle first, and then fill in the sides. Also, I read its good for a plant to become a little rootbound during flowering, because the plant will stop growing roots and put 100% of its energy into flowering. Can anyone verify this, or did I get some bad info?

It is usually the first 2-3 weeks of flowering (12/12) that a plant doubles.. I agree with that 100%..

and after that.. the plant will hardly grow at all.. maybe only 1 inche over the next 40-50days....

Although the buds will grow.. and if it is over fertilized.. it may shoot out some strange long thin buds.. but that's it..

If you start in a 3-5 gallon bucket.. and water and feed your plant correctly.. you can grow a great p lant without transplanting.. Watering correctly is KEY, cause it allows the plant to use the entire pot for a root ball.. as opposed to just one side.. or just the bottom..

i have decided to repot, they are to lovely to risk getting root bound thank you all for your advice. i got 33 liter pots that should do the trick.
