I can't believe that people can read that we were created in gods image, and not come to the conclusion that the whole story is about stroking our ego. I mean what the hell would god need reproductive organs and our entire complex biological system for if he's the designer of all reality?
oh, not to mention that the bible was a collection of stories partially in writing and partially word of mouth, which was finally made into a collection approx. 600 years after christ.

They really need to edit the Bible. I mean, we all know Genesis is a fictional story, that there's really no such thing as talking snakes and boats capable of holding every species of animal. It teaches a really horrible lesson too: the lesson of Original Sin. Original Sin is the idea that we're all born as evil, worthless pieces of crap unless we show up at church and follow all their rituals (including the money-giving ritual of course). I think anyone with half a brain can realize that people aren't innately evil, that people are driven to evil by social conditions and not invisible demons that inhabit their body from birth. That much can be proven by statistics, which show no correlation between religiosity and lower crime rates. So why can't we cut that part of the Bible out? Why do we continue to give to our children this book that teaches them that they are God's mistake, and that they must pay for the sin of a woman who thirsted for a bite of the Tree of Knowledge thousands of years ago? We should be teaching our children to feast from the Tree of Knowledge!
The Old Testament teaches us to stone homosexuals to death. It teaches us to stone disobedient children to death. It teaches us to stone adulterers to death. Why do Christians still publish this stuff? They have rejected such actions as immoral centuries ago, and yet they do not edit their books. By continuing to publish this stuff, they give assholes like Fred Phelps something to point to and say "see look, God really does hate fags, it says so right here". And he's right. According to the Christian Bible, God hates fags. So do something about it.
Actually, there was somebody who did something about it: Thomas Jefferson. He produced his own edited version of the Bible. He cut out the entire Old Testament as well as all references to divinities, mystical beings and magic tricks. A Bible with no gods or witches or demons or miracles, just Jesus preaching peace and tolerance towards men. That was a good step in the right direction, but Christians have forgotten about Jefferson's Bible for some reason. Instead they keep on publishing the verses that promote homophobia, sexism, slavery and genocide out of tradition; they have no problem giving up the ideals but for some reason want to hold onto the texts, which is nothing short of blatant hypocrisy. If you truly believe Jesus wanted you to preach peace and goodwill toward men, do him a favor and leave Leviticus out of your Bibles, would you?

Those contradictions may only be misinterpreted... maybe it's God telling you NOT TO TAKE THAT STUFF TOO LITERALLY. It's more of a metaphor then anything.
The snake in the tree of knowlage tells only lies... follow your heart and not your mind. I'm reading The Tree Of Knowlage by Don Miguel Ruiz and it's pretty interesting... it explains how one builds up their ego or "The Tree Of Knowlage" from when they start speaking a language. Not right away but shortly after they start believing in their own dream world, and see and feel only what they want to in their minds. Very interesting stuff.

It's not all metaphorical. Some of it clearly demands obedience to the letter. I fail to see the deep metaphorical meaning in something like "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."

One of my favorite gory Bible scenes is 2 Kings 2:23-24, where Elisha calls upon God to kill 42 children who mock him for being bald.
And he [Elisha] went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.
