Doctor G; the Little Coffeeshop
The Little Coffeeshop is just that, little. Down a few steps off the sidewalk its small size is no reflection of its demeanor. The owners are well educated in the cannabis and the locals that make their way in are friendly and willing to direct a stranger to a new sandwich shop or pub. The quality of the smoke is not compromised by the size of the shop, the union watches out for that. Prices are fair, and not as excessive as the more tourist oriented places. Just down the street is a reincarnation of the old Mellow Yellow. While it carries the name of the first of the recognized coffeeshops the atmosphere is more tourist oriented. Prices are a euro or two higher than the Little, but there is very little difference in selection or quality. That is one consolation to the increased enforcement to the cannabis rules in Amsterdam; the quality is more consistent than years ago. Twenty years ago it was considerably more hit and miss; today the biggest difference is in the selection and the organic label. The locals do appreciate organic produce more than their North American counterparts. The corner grocery stores still have crates of fresh fruit in front under the awnings and there are more than enough sandwich shops and bakeries to satisfy any hunger.
