1 hit then pass it to a friend if it's a bowl/bong. But if it's a joint puff puff pass. unless you get a shitty hit then you get three. Oh and if you get a shotty only one.

i've actually had someone have the audacity to demand to hit the joint (of my weed, which i payed for, which i didn't not buy from, nor around him) after i gave him a shotgun... we were smoking and all, he asked for a shotgun and i gave it to him, then he told me "i skipped his second turn" i looked stunned for a moment, and then the only thing that could go through my head was "OHHHH HELLLL NO!"

i take a big hit, breath in a little air, then finish off with another drag off of the pipe. this is how i've seen it done from when i first started so i've done it ever since without really thinking about it.

I tend to keep my lighter lit too long, i even put a flame on cherries (Bowls only ofcorse).

On joints or blunts i kind of do something like: pull, open mouth, pull, open mouth, big pull, then inhale, i seem to have a habbit of getting alot of smoke around my face by opening my mouth before i take my hit. Kinda weird but oh well...
