Growing journal entry 1 1-30-06

I have about 25 seeds germinating. 3 have pulled through and are in the soil. None have popped up yet but the first looks promising, it will probably become the model plant. Found a couple more seeds laying around and decided to start those too. I have my first plot dug and filled and I believe that it is close to perfect. I used a rather young manure but I think it is broke down enough to do great for my little girls. I used a mix of potting soil and horse manure with a couple cups of lime and soon ammonium nitrate(33-1-2). Iâ??ll have to check ph and temperature to decide when to plant. The lime will help to decompose the manure into usable nutrients for the plant thus growing organically. Lime typically causes the pH to fall to acidity but I used so little. The hole is approx. 3 ft deep and 2 ft in diameter. It took 35 gallons of soil mix to fill so its definitely big enough. I am planning to use a security tip I read from a gorilla growing site where to make a bigger plot and plant 2-5 plants in little clusters. I see it to be efficient and another way I can improve my experience. The key is to check for the males and get them out, though Iâ??m sure this wonâ??t be a problem but who knows where Iâ??ll be in July/August . The hardest part will be carrying it out without popping the pollen sacs. Iâ??m not sure as the size but I estimate itâ??ll be about 6-7 feet by august assuming this seeds right now do well. Iâ??m concerned about the temperature, itâ??s been very warm for this time of year. Iâ??m worried that the temperature might dip down and frost will kill my babies when I take them outside but ill watch the weather and play it by ear. The temperature recently have been lows of 50 to highs of 75 still a bit too cold and I think that is the reason my seeds arenâ??t germinating faster. I will give it time, as always. The hardest part will be making time go. I look forward to having a monstrous plant that smells like the sweet aroma of heaven growing in my woods. They truly are a beautiful plant and they grow like weeds. Well, Iâ??ll log in in a couple days.

Entry 2 1-31-06
Found two seeds had opened up and planted them. Dug second plot but it was much smaller, there may be too many roots for my girl to compete and ill probably not use it. I have surveyed some land I plan to grow on. Itâ??ll be quite a hike from my house so that may keep me away if you know what I mean. It has a creek running through it and thatâ??ll be perfect water source. Due to activity around my home Iâ??ll need to grow farther from my house. Setting up the plot will be difficult as will harvesting. I plan to harvest in 1/3s basically meaning Iâ??ll harvest the crops when they are ripe.
Checked temperature of both seeds and seedlings and they shows under 60*, which explains the slow growth. I put them inside and set up a heater. The temperatures rose significantly, but Iâ??ll have to make sure it doesnâ??t break 90* which shouldnâ??t be a problem. Iâ??m going to ask some friends for seeds and prepare them for the ground as soon as weather permits.

Entry 3 2-02-06
Planted a couple more seeds yesterday and one more today making a total of 8 planted. The first little seedling sprouted through the surface. I peeled the seed case from it giving it a better chance to survive. The heater apparently made all the difference. I watched the temp. of the seeds and they stay from 60 -80* which is near perfect. Iâ??m currently checking the temp of the seedlingâ??s soil. I moved it a few inches closer to the heater and I hope that the soil will stay around 65-80*. I glad that that seedling finally pulled through, I was getting worried that it was too cold and that I was going to have to wait a couple months. The temperature wasnâ??t quite as high outside as I thought so they may need to stay in for a couple weeks. Ill watch the weather for the last estimated frost and when the lows are around the mid 50â??s. As long as they are inside I want to do a brief experiment using music. Iâ??ve heard from a couple reliable sources that music directly affects growth. Iâ??ll have a couple plants without and a couple with music.

Entry 4 2-03-06
The first small seedling is developing nicely and another one popped her pretty little head out of the soil. Couple more seeds popped open and I planted them. I removed the seed casing from the second seedling with a small needle. I noticed 2 layers of seed casing: The hard shell case, and the â??muzzleâ?�. The muzzle is what I call that little yellowish mask that covers the leaves. I notice that my first little girl still had it and it was restricting the leaves from opening up and taking in the beautiful sunshine. I carefully removed it and filled in the soil around the base of the stem, in effect, giving it a much stronger (bigger) root system down the road. I carefully dug to see how the other seedlings were doing. I found one that hadnâ??t done anything and the root tip had turned black which means it was dehydrated which I found impossible because the soil was never dry, but germinating seeds is really a roll of the dice. Some seeds are just no good. I have about a 55-65% germination rate which is good for the overall condition of the seeds. But it defiantly could be much better. I blame it mostly on the weather (or the fact that I probably started a bit early). The weather today was great. Sunny as a summer day and almost as warm. The high today was 65* and the low was 45*with 55% humidity. It honestly felt much warmer and probably was with the sun (I just check my outdoor thermometer and it read about 68-69*). But as I was saying the rest of the submerged seedlings are doing great. I expect the real boom of sprouts to happen in the next couple days to a week at the most.

Entry 5 2-04-06
Two more sprouts popped up. Pulled the muzzle of one and the other one was already free. I noticed a rather rare and admirable quality of one, It started with 3 round leaves as opposed to two. This mean that 3 new shoots will be able to sprout from each set of leaves. To count, I have 11 seeds that opened and are growing which is very good. The weather is getting colder and there is a chance for SNOWâ?¦ tomorrow, and Monday. Iâ??ll keep it inside the best I can, security permitting. Added some organic additives (wood ashes(potassium), Lime (calcium, and decomposition) and some other vitamin supplements. I mixed it in thoroughly and turned the soil. I need to check pH before planting and make sure its between 5.3 and 5.8.
Location of future plots has been decided and work on those will start within the next week. Of the seeds planted 11 out of 13 are growing giving me a 85% survival rate from seed which is good in my book. It may actually be 12 of 13, but Iâ??ll have to watch.

Entry 6 2-06-06
I have 4 established little sprouts that really starting to grow. They are about an inch tall each and are turning to that beautiful dark green shade. They are developing their first set of ridged leaves. The temperature fell last night and it snowed this morning. The seedling in the pot downstairs has perked up a little but not much. I checked to seedlings and they are a bit cold. It read at 46 which is too cold but this is little I can do for them and I think theyâ??ll be fine. Itâ??s supposed to warm up tomorrow soâ?¦ Iâ??ll play it by ear. I hope they are strong enough to withstand it. I made a hydroponics system yesterday and put one of my beautiful little yellow pansies. It is real small and I want to see if I got the system right. Its actually borderline with aero-ponics because I have a attachment on it that shoots a stream of solution at the roots. I want to get a piece of hose and make it a drip system and I will soon. No new seeds germinated due to the cold.

. The weather has been too cold lately and I donâ??t want to risk killing any seeds. Iâ??ll start shortly after the last frost. I think the ones started in January and February are going to be monstrous. Ten months is a long time to grow. The oldest is 10 days old and is barely starting its third (second of the ridged leaves) set of leaves. The Three leaf sprout is growing fastest. I canâ??t wait to see how it turns out over the two leaf sprouts. Another seed germinated and I popped it into the soil.

Entry 8 2-13-06
The seedlings have really started to flourish. I have them under 24 hour light for 2 days but they are back to normal light now. It gave the growth of the new four as well as the old four a real good boost. The first four are halfway with developing their 3rd set and the second four are developing their 2nd set. The three-cotyledon seeding (newly labeled plant #3) is growing the fastest with the first one (plant #1) right there with it. I researched the proper time to plant for this year and it seems late march will be the best. Hopefully It will warm up before then but I will prepare. (some how). I picked up some 12-0-0 organic blood meal for the plot/plants. I gave about a teaspoon to each one. I hope it wasnâ??t too much but its organics and Iâ??m not too concerned. I can not wait to take my first hit of Charlie homegrown organic dankâ?¦.. another update with news soon. By the way a couple more plants sprouted and I put them in soil. Weâ??ll see them in a few days. Maybe less J

The weather has gotten better. The temperature has been between 40* - 70*. The 2 leaders are outside and are doing great. They like the blood meal. I noticed a little burn on the oldest ones. Not a problem yet but ill just water it until I know its alright. Iâ??ve been trying to get a liquid organic foliar spray. I was thinking fish emulsion or worm castings. I set up a worm farm. Need to get some worms though. There is no hurry I guess. Iâ??ll let some of the nutrients breakdown in their compost. The oldest four are outside and have been moved to bigger pots. Plant #1 and plant #3 are growing fastest followed by #4 and #2. There are about 5 more grow thing their first set of (ridged) leaves and the rest are still sprouting. I have 1 or 2 that arenâ??t growing and may have died. Iâ??ll pull them if so I have some that can take its place. Iâ??m saving seeds for march when I can operate outside alone. I donâ??t like the cold weather.

Have 10 sprouts and 4 in soil. The first four are all developing their first set of 3-prong leaves. They are doing good and are taking to the blood meal very well. I discontinued the miracle foliar spray. And replaced it with spring water. Its supposed to be cold here until Friday so the little girls are going to stay with me inside. I accidentally left a few little seedlings in the dark for a couple days and it really made the stems fatten up. All the sprouts are within 1"-5". and some show a purplelish color when they get below 50 and the others look more banana yellow/green. About 10 of the original seeds were supposed to be purple but I got them from a shady guy at my school so I was expecting anything. I was going to call the yellowier stuff banana bud.

All 10 are outside soaking up the unexpected sunshine. I was a 80% chance for rain today. Shows how accurate the weather channel is. Its around the mid 60s and feels warm. The first 4 are growing faster everyday. I've noticed little leaf-tips coming out at the first ridged leaf's node. I've never seen shoots that early on a plant. The others are getting really tall with fat stems. Leaf development isn't near as fast as the first 4 but they are growing. I am going to attempt to induce polyploidy by soaking them in a crocus(flower) bulb tea. There is a mutagen in the bulb that interferes with the splitting of chromosomes causing it to have 3 or even 4 sets of chromosomes, meaning four leaves per node, four bud sites per node. It seems simple enough to induce it but it only has a small percentage that it'll work.

I havn't updated in a while so I'll bring you up to speed. One of my dogs go to my first set of 10 and killed 7 of them. I have 3 of the originals left, the triploid, a purple and another little plant. I started 30 more on the 11th and 20 or so have sprouted. The weather is perfect (lows of 55 highs of 75) and I will plant the first three later today. The triploid is growing very fast. It is only about 4 " and has about 5 sets of leaves. The internodal spacing is non-existant. I need to dig some plots. I will be screening off plants because I have don't know where to put alot of them. The farther from my house the less attention I will give them, but if they are close and I visit it regularly I risk getting caught (which can NOT happen). So i have less than a month to find out what and where I'm going to do this. I hate the mid season paranoia of people finding your plant. I'm considering just growing a couple and making them perfect as possible. But if i grow less... i get less. I am going to get some pictures soon. I have plenty from feburary and I plan to make some more tomorrow. For right now i can post a picture of triploid I found on the web... Mine is like it but smaller. Notice how it has 3 of each leaf per node. If another whos grown polyploids reads this, tell me how they did... I need to know if this thing is gonna be 20 feet tall or jusy like 6-9 like usual.

I haven't been updating because I need to get some pictures. I plan to get some tomorrow and they will be on the journal in a few days.

I have confirmed the sex of my triploid as female. Its kinda strange though. Its mid spring and its showing hairs. I think what happened was I started before the spring equinox (photoperiod outside goes to 12/12 in spring and fall). And when the light went to 12/12 it made it flower and now I think its switching back to veg. Would this make it stress into hermaprodite? And whats the possibility of it continuing to bud. I've heard rumors of plants that flower after its 2 or 3 months old and my plant is alittle over 2 months old. It is nearly 2 foot tall. I have another thats alittle bit smaller but it smells soooo skunky. If i shake it, it makes the area smell like skunk. That smell is more addictive that smoking it. If you've grown before you know the smell... truly divine.. I'll only talk about my biggest 2 on this journal but i have 20 or 30 total. I hope to sex most of them before i plant and that will thin them down by about 50%. I pulled a cutting that wasn't getting any sun from my triploid and It'll hopefully root in the next week.

Good news and bad news... The bad news is it'll be alittle longer until I'll have pictures. My friend said he wanted to take the pictures himself. Since no one else can know where they are I can't let him take them. The good news is that both of my plants are confirmed female. The triploid is 27 inches tall and the skunky plant is 26 inches.

Thanks sharp, The weather has been really good recently... Right now it is 72*F (21.9*C) and its been between 50*F and 90*F (10*C - 32*C). I added another bucket of composted horse manure and they are LOVING it. I'll get pictures in a few days and you can see how fast they are growing.

I'll try to get some new pictures wendesday or thursday. I just measured and the triploid is 36" even and the oldest plant (which will be called "amber" just so things don't get confusing) is 38".
