My First Grow(Comments,Criticisms Welcome)
Whats up guys this summer will be my first time growing. I've researched pretty thoroughly the last 3 days all over the net, etc.. I will be posting in this thread with any questions or comments about my grow throughout the summer. First start off by saying any help is greatly appreciated.(Especially from experienced users)
I haven't gotten my hands on seeds yet, but have narrowed it down to either Durbon Poison or Malawi Gold. I'm pretty sure most of you have heard of Durbon Poison but do you guys have any experience with Malawi Gold? Its a Satvia and has pretty nice potency along with high yield and short flowering period. It also says that its pretty easy to grow and recommended for first time users. Forgot to mention im ordering from Hemcy Seed company. Great reviews fast shipping and stealth all factors that went into picking them. A bit pricey but am willing to pay a little more for quality service.
Finding a location is another thing on the "to do" list since I'm at college right now and am planning to grow during the summer when I'm back home. I live in Wisconsin, in pretty populated area in south east part of the state. My town and surrounding towns/villages offer me plenty of places to choose from. The best spot I have in mind has a water source near by in semi-dense woods jammed between some subdivisions. My buddy lives in one of these and I know its a neighborhood full of old people some I'm not too worried but will still be precautios.
The main problem I see in my future is starting off the little guys. I plan to germinate the seeds through the paper towel method. After this is where the problem occurs. I don't see how I can start the germinated seeds off in little cups or pots because I won't be able to keep anything inside or near the house. I'm really thinking of just getting good soil supplies and trying to put the seeds straight into the ground. Is this a good idea? I've read it's mainly just more of a risk but I don't see any other options.
I got my list of supplies needed so I think I'm pretty much set there. Depending upon the site Ill let you know what I choose to do. I've read that fertilizing should only be done after 3-4 weeks. Is this true?
Another thing I haven't really grasped yet is when you are able to determine the sex of the plant. Any range for that in weeks? Oh and when people say "Cull" the male what does this mean? I really don't plan on sexing the male plants as it seems to be a confusing and risky process, but I dunno. I think Ill just kill the male plants?
More details to come as the planting date nears. Thanks for your help..Ace21kg Reviewed by Ace21kg on . First of all, you should research more about growing. There's plenty of time until summer so get busy.
Durban is a good plant. I don't know much about Malawi Gold but sativas usually won't yield high nor have a short flowering time. However, in the case of potency they're unmatched.
The location you described seems to be an excellent growing place, just make sure you won't be seen watering your plants.
Planting germinated seeds right into nature is a bit dangerous for them. Try using a cultivator or cover them with transparent plastic cups but cut a hole to let the seedlings breathe. You can also plant them in pots near your future garden, but put them in a safe place where snails and other animals can't reach them.
Insted of fertilizing, you should enrich your soil by mixing good potting soil or manure into it. In a very good medium, it is possible for plants to get on without fertilizer during their whole lifetime! And yes, fertilizing should only be done after four weeks. This is the average time when a plant depletes organic nutrients in an average soil.
Flowering begins at July-August depending on location and plant position. If you discovered a male plant early just cut it off, but if it's flowers are in an advanced stage of development you should burn or bury it. After the male has been cut, mature pollen sacks can open up when drying and pollinate your garden.
Have a nice crop!

Depending on where you live you may be able to plant earlier, like around march-april. "Cull"ing out males means killing them. Males will make females produce almost 90% less smokeable bud. You wanna plant where it can get alot of sun so semi-dense woods may not be the best place. Look for a field with waist-high weeds. Plant with in the weeds. Make a 3 foot deep hole and fill it with mostly good soil. Alittle of the native soil and light organic fertilizer.
When the plant gets to be waist high, You will be able to lay it down and make it grow across the ground. When it flowers you can have waist high buds.

Thanks for the comments, I was also thinking about planting just 1 at a bunch of different sites, and if it turns out to be male to just forget about it. Sothern exposure to the sun is what you want right? Ill be checking out spots this weekend to see what we have, Ill keep you posted if I have any problems

1 plant per plot is a good idea but if you find a male kill it! A single male can pollenate a batch of females froma mile away. Best to kill them. If a female gets pollenated it takes all the energy that would go into bud and resin production and puts it into seed production...

This is my first grow also (this spring), but i have watched many friends grow and stuff so i know most of the basics, and ive seen many strains grow from start to finish...
For outdoor i would deffinetly advise you to grow one of these:
Durban Poison, Hollands hope, Aurora Indica, Mixed Sativa.
They are all Nirvana strains which go for 8.37(E) and $15.00(USD) per pack, nice value for quality buds...
Hope that helped a bit, peace.

Motarebel at Growshopalien has better strains then that for the same price. And they are stable too.
It's been a while since I've heard some one talk about letting there male pollenate the entire towns females. When I read...I'll just leave the male to grow for the hell of it...it makes me want to strangle them! Ever week in the spring and summer some idiot who is too lazy to read says they are going to let there males grow just for fun!
If I start seeing that shit all the time again. I'm gonna fuck with that person(far warning)don't do your reading ,get fired on!
Because I'm tired of explaining this to ppl!

A lot of more experienced growers wrote this on an another forum. Some of them are living in Holland and have first hand info from the locals. One of my friends tried nirvana but half of his seeds even did not sprout, so I think that is true. Furthermore, nirvana does not breed their own strains, but buy the seeds of other companies then cross them with Skunk #1.
