Just keep doing it on 18/6. Your friend is wrong. You can tell him that with certainty. 24/0 and 18/6 are both lighting schedules for vegetation. 12/12 is for flowering.
As for male or female? This has nothing to do with lighting really. In fact, you have more chance of a hermie (both male & female) when you cause stress (like changing to 24/0 now)
So it's all good. No need for desperation.
