I was thinking of doing some cherry tomatoes on my balcony. I eat a lot of salad...so it'd be nice to grow my own. When would I plant them? Obviously not now as it's getting cold...but when is the ideal time to plant tomatoes for outdoor growth?

you start your seeds inside...where they can be nice and toasty...
then as soon as the last frost hits...you plant your seedlings...

perhaps If you faricated a little green house on the porch using plastic...you could keep them warm and enhance the shorter day of sun with a 250wHID lamp. that's what I do...

I am looking at dabbling with some indoor vegetable gardening and have been poking around to get a feel for the ins and outs, but find that there are a lot of basic things that I can't seem to get the answers to. Well just to start off, With the pollination of some budding veggies, will an oscillating fan in the room be sufficient to transfer pollen or do you have to always use brushes and so on for consistent results? I could possibly start a miniature bee farm in the room for some cross pollination I guess, LOL.

what seem to be a good light output/wattage for something like a tub of cherry tomatoes? Also, I read that MH lights are good to take green veggies all the way through and HPS for budding plants, but with the budding plants should they use a MH at all or is a HPS sufficient?

I am looking for any lists that state an approximate wattage need for certain veggies. all I can seem to find is greens need less while budding veggies need more and so on, but I would like to know for instance, will a 600w be sufficient for a 5x6 area, or do they suck up as much light as MJ? do veggies need less light than MJ? I want to get an idea of what it would take to meet some basic monthly veg treats for the family, not every meal, but something hear and there throughout the winter months.

Can anyone recommend some good articles on indoor gardening. LW I have been over to the Cutting Edge forums and will continue to poke around there. Hope that everything doesn't sound too confusing.

Any input will be appreciated.

pollination. I have been told all of the above...fans, brushes, and gentle shaking of the stem w/flowers...ladybugs eat pests and can help in the pollination process. I have all my veggies outside now, but am trying to complete my nursery. I actually put pepper plants under a canopy and they went crazy, w/only 50% light.

1000w Mh Or hps will work in my opinion. Can you wire electrical components? I bought all my ballasts raw and wired them. Look for link to my website above. On the middle lower right hand side...There is a link. copy/paste that link to your browser...then use it to search for raw ballasts...you will find a wide range of lights and kits that will do the trick!

You can grow any of the varieties you listed above...the only thing is; You must find the proper medium for each> Are you Hydro?, or Soil?

Thanks LW sorry to here about your foot. I have a couple 1K MH balasts sitting around somewhere that I can use, but I just need some extra room, my sister and law is taking up the extra 180SQF room up right now and it is a pain. I am growing in soil right now, but am thinking about doing the veggies in hydro but I am not sure yet. I am waiting to get some literature in the mail right now about indoor gardening and then I will have a better idea of what I want to experiment with.

Hello all, sorry to butt in like this but I'm bringing in my herbs from the outdoor garden this afternoon and have only 24h and 12/12 light available (not making a 3rd room, omg I'd be so confused!).

So far I've got basil, pennyroyal, 2 other types of mint, and rosemary.

Which room would you recommend, 24 or 12 hours of light?

Or to maximize my space, should I switch my 24h room to 18/6 and put the herbs in there?

Nice yeild off those peppers, they look awesome. would be crazy to see an indica or sativa yield there. Hey can you take a pic of your light set up, seems like its pretty efficient, just wanted to see its configuration in your garden.

LVNerd. I run a 6 foot hydrofarm light rail and w/hortilux hps
about 2 feet parallel to wall.

I hang a couple 1000w MH I move over an area I feel need some light intensity.

the piks you see have a 250w hps sont agromax, I think right over top. peace
