I take a big hit from my pipe then blow the smoke out of the fan. We don't have ventilation in our house (and I've never seen vents in anyone's house over here) so it goes directly outside. I also cap the bowl with my thumb to prevent smoke escaping, or just hold the pipe up the fan to keep it burning and get rid of smoke
