United Arab Emirates company to oversee six U.S. ports

    The Associated Press

WASHINGTON ?? A company in the United Arab Emirates is poised to take over significant operations at six American ports as part of a corporate sale, leaving a country with ties to the Sept. 11 hijackers with influence over a maritime industry considered vulnerable to terrorism.

The Bush administration considers the UAE an important ally in the fight against terrorism since the suicide hijackings and is not objecting to Dubai Ports World??s purchase of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. The $6.8 billion sale is expected to be approved Monday.

The British company is the fourth largest ports company in the world, and its sale would affect commercial U.S. port operations in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia.

Critics of the proposed purchase said a port operator complicit in smuggling or terrorism could manipulate manifests and other records to frustrate Homeland Security??s already limited scrutiny of shipping containers and slip contraband past U.S. Customs inspectors.

Shipping experts noted that many of the world??s largest port companies are not based in the United States, and they pointed to DP World??s strong economic interest in operating ports securely and efficiently.

DP World said it won approval from a secretive U.S. government panel that considers security risks of foreign companies buying or investing in American industry.

The U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which could have recommended that President Bush block the purchase, includes representatives from the departments of Treasury, Defense, Justice, Commerce, State and Homeland Security.

The State Department describes the UAE as a vital partner in the fight against terrorism. But the UAE, a loose federation of seven emirates on the Saudi peninsula, was an important operational and financial base for the hijackers who carried out the attacks against New York and Washington, the FBI concluded.

Criticism: Speaking to Fox News yesterday, Charles Schumer, a US senate said that the take-over of P&O??s operations at six US shipping ports by a UAE company ??doesn??t make sense.?

Schumer said in the interview that the company (DPW) was a ??secret little group? and that he ??doesn??t trust their word.?

??Should we be outsourcing our own security?? he asked ??it??s not just aimed at the UAE. Should we be outsourcing police? Should we be outsourcing things to affect our security? It doesn??t make sense to do it.? He also called for a public review of the security aspects of the takeover.

Chuck Schumer is from Brooklyn, and used to glad-hand us at the subway stations during election times in the 1970's through 90's. For those that are wondering - yes, he's Jewish.

Bill Planned to Ban New Bullets
A New York Congressman who was a main sponsor of the crime bill enacted last fall said yesterday that he would seek a ban on all ammunition that can penetrate bulletproof vests. Representative Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of Brooklyn, made the announcement in response to a news report that two new types of handgun ammunition. The new products are Rhino-Ammo, capable of producing a baseball-sized wound, and the Black Rhino, which can pierce armor. They are made of carbon-based plastics, polymers, which shatter into razor-sharp shrapnel upon impact. The ammunition, made by Signature Products Corporation of Huntsville, Ala., has prompted criticism from police and gun control advocates. David Keen, chief executive of Signature, said the ammunition he is about to introduce is "a strictly defensive round." Mr. Schumer called Mr. Keen's position "ludicrous."

Seems to me there is something wrong with the whole 9/11 myth thing if Bushite is allowing UAE to control ports in USA. Makes me wonder what the hell is real anymore.

Now, is bushite really going after terrorists, are there really any, and if so, and they are arab muslims, then why the hell is he allowing an Arab company to take over US ports? Kind of goes back to bushite allowing the Bin laden family to fly away home on 9/11. Why would he do that if he wasn't in on the whole terrorist thing from the start? If there really is a terrorist threat.

    What a pile of crock!!!!!

I'm sure glad I don't live there. Mind you living here aint much better. May only get worse too as time marches on.

We'd be better off with wise-guys in charge of the docks, behind the scenes, like it used to be. During WWII, they kept things going with no attacks against our shores.

If this Dubai deal goes through, there will be calls for the impeachment of Bush.
