This is going to sounds like an asshole thing, but the best tip in the world is to buy a few books on growing. Learn the basics by reading up first and with a solid foundation of knowledge you will avoid 90% of the mistakes first time growers make.

there are also e book + dvds on e bay I bought a dvd + it was good

hi dont worry with going out and buying books....if its your first grow..the best site for info is....www.overgrow.com gives you everything you need and doesnt cost a penny....good luck

a great place to start is the Cannabis grow bible..www.cannabisbook.com
and www.greencandypress.com..i take it your going to grow from seed well make sure you do your homework before buying...and make sure you get what you bought have you thought of a hydroponics starter kits very easy way to grow
