Apparently I forgot that moment in history where Germany decided to follow Hitler because he had a gun. Forget the aspect of skilled orator telling the people exactly what they want to hear and reassuring them that there was something, or rather someone responsible for their misfortunes. You're entire argument boils down to: Its better to be on the most powerful side, rather than the most virtuous. It certainly seems to be how the current war is justified.
