the difference is cars serve a purpose, handguns don't...well, robbing and raping and murdering, I guess. You can say you need them as a safety precaution when you're hunting bears or something with a bow and arrow...but if you want to be a real badass and fucking kill bears, do it properly like a man.

Bonsai guy, I agree, free the pot smokers and keep the real criminals in there for fucking ever. It's just a lot harder to differentiate between who could safely use guns and who can't, versus just eliminating them all together. Prohibition didn't work with alcohol, but I can brew that up in my bathtub, in mass quantities. I'd like to see somebody do that with hand guns...I'm sure they could, just not very efficiently.
Ok then, I'll humour you for a minute. Lets say I break into your house with a Reminton 870 12 gauge shotgun, you have no gun. I want rob you and possibly to kill you and your family so you can't identify me, assuming you have a family. What do you do? Calling the police isn't goin to do you a godamn thing except they will be there to clean up the bodies.
