I know nothing about national affairs...but wouldn't abandoning the middle east be a little impractical? Don't they have materials and resources that are important to the U.S?

Yes, Oil - only because they're lucky that their geography is rich with it. If it were up to me, their "luck" would be limited because I would develop alternative energy sources, and tell them to pipe the oil up their ass.

It would be great to see them left powerless due to oil being made obsolete - as it SHOULD be, regardless of the political/religious climate in the middle east.
