How many people have read Jack Herer's website? I thought I knew a lot about marijuana prohibition until I read it, now I believe Socrates was right about understanding how much you don't know being the beginning of wisdom.

He's been a leader of this movement for decades and has a lot of info on his site. His book was a bestseller in France called The Emperer Wears No Clothes. I found the site to be a little disorganized and he definitely seems very enthusiastic but that's maybe cause I can be a little anal sometimes.

I checked out as many of his facts as I could and most everything checks out. Good read and I feel important to anyone trying to understand where Washington's head is at and why they have these polices that just make no sense relative to everything else.

The main question I have is that, on his site and others, it is stated that if we plant 6% of our land with industrial hemp grown for fuel that we would be entirely independent of oil. Did they mean 6% of our continental land mass or 6% of our farmland?

Jack is the man--if you get a chance to meet him it is great--he is a powerful speaker even since his stroke.
He lives a couple hours from me on one of the best pot farms there is here locally.

Any answer on whether it is 6% of the US continental land mass or just 6% of our farmland. It makes a huge difference. There is no way to plant 6% of our continental mass, which kills that idea, but if it's 6% of our farmland then we should be doing this now.

I believe that we could plant of 6% of the land mass. We could do this by using existing farm land that is used for worthless crops like tobacco, corn, lettuce, etc etc etc, and convert it to cannabis hemp, along with new lands set aside for its growth. Not only would we human thrive, so would migrating birds. One thing i have noticed in my 50 years of life is how the migrating bird population has dwindled down to practically nothing. Most of this is due to chemicals and pesticides harming the population. With the healthy cannabis hemp seeds once again being available to our little feather friends the populations and migrations would be a sight to see.

Hi daima, thanks for the reply. If it is 6% of the contiguous land mass of the US then I hate to say but it will not wean us off of oil by itself. There is NO WAY to plant that much and harvest it. 6% of the contiguous land mass of the US is a lot of land! Massively more land than we currently use for farming every other crop in total. A lot of that land being in, as an example, Alaska where needless to say we won't be planting in arctic wilderness.

That being said, however, the energy market for hemp is still massive. If we do nothing but what the Europeans do and use B20 (20% biodiesel) that is still a significant reduction in air pollution. The current energy market in the US is over $60 billion per year so 20% of that is an extra $12 billion in our farmers instead of oil executives pockets . Also, there are a lot of new process' coming out for creating fuel from biomass so there could be some efficiency gains from these new technologies.

Also, that is just looking at hemp for fuel. If nothing else we should be growing it to keep from cutting down trees for paper. It used to be said a squirrel could go from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River and never touch the ground. Now we are down to less than 4% of our old growth forest and we are cutting it down for what? Paper? Cardboard? Fiberboard and pressboard? That just doesn't make any sense what-so-ever if we have any other alternative, let alone one that pollutes less and creates superior products to wood.

Well, even if it's not an entire solution by itself it would be a significant reduction of the problem. Used in conjunction with other forms of renewable energy sources I believe it would reduce our pollution and energy problems by well over 20-40% based on research figures.

And yes, the birds would love it and it would help them to come back from extinction. That is a worthwhile goal all by itself.

Swell to see you here in the forum.
We would have a zillion and zillion tons of seed, which is around 30% oil. I would dare say that if we made our products right and used our seed oil properly, it could be done. I have wonderful thoughts about the job creation also. The distribution of wealth instead of the concentration of wealth. We would have to make some sacrifices, but none that equal the loss of life when using fossil fuels, rather it be human life or animal life/Ocean Life.
A book(among many) i would like to ask you to read if possible is John W. Roulac's, Hemp Horizons. We need decent paublic transit. We need to put the needs of our home, the Earth, above the wants we humans have linked success to. In terms of thinking of the Planet, Success takes on a whole new definition. We need to be realistic with our needs, not dreamalistic.
We need to take a hard look at our species and re-evaluate what "life" means.
The Earth is a living organism. Like all living things when abused they deteriorate and die.
What ever differences we can make as a people we better start something.
This record heat is the Earth is telling us she has a fever. She is ill.
I think that when people think in terms of heat that they dont realise how much of a difference a few degrees can make. Our lives as a species become in danger when we reach just 4 or 5 degrees above what it should be. The Earth is no different.
