constructing a glass bong
This weekend I'm going to make a bong out of an empty Jack Daniel's bottle, using my friend's drill press.
I'm planning on buying a glass bowl/stem from a local head shop. I'm wondering at what angle I should mount the stem (and drill the hole for it). The first thing I thought of is 45 degrees. Is that how most bongs are, or do you think it's a steeper angle?
Also, what kind of a material should I use to seal the hole? I'm guessing silicone sealant or caulk should work fine.panties Reviewed by panties on . constructing a glass bong This weekend I'm going to make a bong out of an empty Jack Daniel's bottle, using my friend's drill press. if you can buy a glass bowl you should be buying a nice hand blown glass bong.

but yeah, silicone / caulk is good, and a 45º - 60º angle is good.

I assume you're using a diamond-tipped drill bit for the glass. If so, go in perpendicular to the surface of the glass. When Drilling into glass, it's hard enough to get the bit to not slip; attempting to drill at an angle will make that damn near impossible.
Also, head shops that sell glass bowls will probably also have rubber gaskets to go along with the slides. Just ask if they have such a thing.
Also, a 1/2" diameter hole with a gasket fits a relatively standard size slide-- I want to say 9mm, but don't hold me to that.

silasbotwin, of course I could buy a bong, but I want to have the challenge and pride of creating my own piece.
Well, I don't think the rubber gasket would work since the JD bottle has a flat surface, and the bowl/stem would be mounted at an upward angle.
I guess you're right about having to drill straight. And yeah, I plan on getting a glass drill bit today. So I guess I'll have to drill a straight hole large enough to hold the stem at a 45-60 deg. angle. (I'm thinking closer to 60 deg). Then, I'll have to use tape or something to hold the stem at the correct angle while the sealant dries.
Hopefully I will be able to use a rubber gasket instead of silicone sealant. The rubber gasket is removable, so if the stem breaks or something, I could just replace that part, wheras with the sealant the whole thing would be broken.

Sounds cool. Does anyone know how to drill through a glass bottle without a diamond-tipped drill? What if I heated it up with a torch then drilled it?
