A lawmaker is proposing another option to deal with repeat sexual offenders -- surgical castration.

Senator Emmett Hanger is promoting legislation that would allow the operation. He says he's fed up with ineffective and costly treatment for sexual predators.

Eight states have laws allowing chemical castration for certain sex offenders. But just how effective surgical castration is remains controversial.

Some opponents argue that the surgery wouldn't address the psychological components that lead offenders to commit crimes. Others have called it barbaric.

Hanger acknowledges the legislature is unlikely to pass the bill. But he says he would consider it a victory if the measure inspires a study on the issue.
