you could light flourescent tubes through midair with a tesla coil. but use it for growing no I doubt it nor use a plasma ball
but check this out though http://www.keelynet.com/biology/darklife.htm
Imagine having a big indoor setup thats free to run from energy from the earth

Holy Shit! KeelyNet... It's been fucking years since I've searched their wierd collection of "strange" science... cool!!!! Thanks Harmonic... I'm going to have fun browsing this website again.
As to the plasma balls... well, the ball on the page you presented Sheist, is one of those static balls... I don't think that will do much for growing...
When I saw "Plasma ball" on the title, I thought other things immediately. I'm not @ my computer right now, but when I get there, I'll post a couple of link I've got...
There's reasearch going on about a "plasma microwave HID sulfur lamp". Try gOOgle for "microwave sulfur lamp".
It's this little lolly-pop bulb, with microwave generators to light up a sulfur/argon mixture of gas. They say the light produces illumination with the spectrum all over the place... much like the sun... unlike MH or HPS. Plus, the bulb is XXX more efficient than HIDs/flourescents... plus you can "throttle" the bulb from 100% to 20%....
So far, it fucking sounds good. But $$$$$$$$.
Again, try those searches... I'll post the links later.
Best,
