He failed. So he took the easy way out and basically committed suicide by agitating bears who were hungry and near their hybernation time.

He didn't deserve to have the time wasted on him for the movie to be made. He was a fuckup, and nothing more. Those animals never needed his protection, and he was worthless for anything but food.
notrightquite Reviewed by notrightquite on . ""Grizzly Man"" I just watched the documentary on Bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell, and I must say its inspirational and motivating. I have a ton of respect for the man, he was nature's perfect servant....I wish the best for his family. Just wanted some feedback from anyone thats watched the film??? (in case you havent figure it out, I have a deep respect and love for animals) Rating: 5

It could have been any bear. Not just the one that killed him. True there have been some bears, sharks, tigers etc that have developed a taste for human flesh but this guy was living on borrowed time. As for the fox, there will always be people and animals who have an affinity for each other but a fox can't eat you and most adults could defend themselves against a fox or even a single wolf or large dog. Kwai Chang Cain, Bruce Lee or the Rock would have been defenseless against a bear without some kind of weapon. They are either food or a threat. Even wild animals who are raised from birth by humans have, on many occasions turned on their benefactors for no apparent reason. And that is the key...reason. They have little capacity for reason, only instinct.

I didnt like it at all except for the fact its about nature. Tim really didnt bring anything new to the table, I was expecting something entirely different than the usual bear habitat doc., using the played out gimmick of suspense by getting as close as possible to the actual creature. I watch a lot of the Discovery/Times, NG, The Science Channel, etc. type channels stoned n have seen my share of bear as well as other animal documentaries n i gotta say this wasnt anything worthy of being put on a pedestal, kinda crappy too. Also, the guy himself I found annoying, right off the bat his character seemed feeble n too flaky. LMAO, i tuned out when he started getting too sentimental over nothing, then talking about his emotions n how his life would be easier if he were a chick, then going on actuallly making slight effort to justify hes not gay, seeming like he was trying to convince himself more than the viewer. That part did it, that quick I got tired of his undisciplined mentality n needless emotional discourse. For a while they were airing a program [Going Tribal i think] of a guy becoming somewhat family with various indigenous tribes, going along with their lifestyle, even in mind-altering rituals [fav part]. That too wasnt a brand new concept, but it was the latest n most detailed of its kind, worth the view.

You guys seem to be saying you liked or disliked it based on if you liked or disliked Tim Treadwell! That is not the point. This was a great film about a true story about an obviously disturbed man that did something extraordinary. You donā??t have to like him or what he did to like this movie. And obviously you did like the movie even though you are bashing the guy or you would have turned it off in the first half hourā?¦. It was on for like 3 hours!!

Why would you care one way or the other if he was gay or not?!?! It was very clear that he was not a sane person, and if his mental instability had anything to do with being gay or not thatā??s fine but why would you judge him?? He is dead, what he did was stupid but also pretty amazing. Living with grizzlyā??s for 13 years is an amazing thing regardless of if he was, gay, or crazy, or liberal, or whatever.

Again if you could not get past your opinions of Tim Tredwell then why did you sit through 3 hours of the show??

Funny thing, I was flipping channels and see Grizzly Man. So I hit the info button and see it's about a guy who spent 13 summers living in Alaska amongst the grizzlies. When I saw he died in 2003 my first thought was "mauled by a grizzly". sure enough...

    Poetic justice.

I suppose there's something noble about dedicating your life to animals, although I quesiton this guy's sanity. Seems to me the guy started thinking he WAS a bear - albeit one without the claws and femur-cracking jaws.

They said the grizzly that killed him was an old scrawny bear with bad teeth. Basically an animal on the verge of death that stumbled upon an easy meal. I saw part where he was lamenting the lack of rain and going on about how the drought was forcing mother bears are eating their cubs. Didn't Mr Wannabe Alpha Bear reason that if a mother bear will eat its own cubs to survive that he was nothing more than an hors d'ouvre waiting to happen? Obviously not.

I'd wager at some point that summer he saw that old, scrawny bear and thought, "He won't make it through the winter unless he puts on some weight." Like I said, poetic justice.

And don't give me the old, "at least he died in the place he loved most" bullshit. Nobody hopes they die going feet-first into a chipper/shredder. I'm sure in his mind he would be shot in the back by a poacher. I feel bad for the chick. Imagine what was going through her skull as she watched a bear maul and kill Grizzly Man, then stalk her down. I wonder if she was on her period? Maybe that's what brought the bear into camp. Surely they had food around too. A regrettable, but laughable and predictable situation.

If only he'd become compelled to live amongst the sheep instead of grizzlies he'd be alive today; possibly cooing "I love you" happily-ever-after on his own Brokeback Mountain...

Almost everything you said was covered in the show had you watched it. The guy was defiantly mentally unstable, there is no question about it. He did go crazy and start to think he was a bear too. He did see and even film the old bear that later kill him. He had lost all of his objectivity and was out of his mind to think his personal "love" for the bears could overcome their basic animal instincts to survive.

But then again he made it 13 seasons with the bears before he was killed which was about 12 seasons more than anyone would have guessed.

Again, I donā??t understand why judging him as a person would make you like or dislike this movie. Like one of the native people said, he crossed a line between man and nature and that itself is disrespectful. So you can even HATE Tim Treadwell if you want. But its still an amazing and moving story irregardless. Not to mention very well put together and narrarted by the director Werner Herzog!

I just want to add this. This is a DOCUMENTARY in case you donā??t understand what that is. Its just a true story about something that really happened. The film maker never once tried to make you think what Treadwell did was a good or noble thing. Herzog goes out of his way to show interviews and read letters from people that are saying all the same things some of you have. That he was crazy, stupid and got what he deserved. Thatā??s just another reason why this is such a good movie. Itā??s not trying to pass any judgments on Tim, just tell the story, nothing more.

I agree 100%, Herzog actually disagreed with what Treadwell was trying to do...I for one love animlas...my brother has a tiger and I've been in the cage with "jewels" daily...never a problem, and they are deadly animals, its all on "how" you let the beast percieve you!!!

Yeah the very end scene is a close up of the eyes of the bear that probably killed Tim and Herzog saying how he can only see the cold stare of a hungry wild animal and how Treadwell could not have been objective to think anything else.

He was basicly saying Tim was wrong.

wow...very good documentary watched it until 4 this mourning. It is very clear he was insane and he must have said "i love you" 1000 times through out that documentary, but i think he had very good character.

ha ha i dont mean to ruin it for anyone but theres one scene where he is ranting about park service and he just goes on for like 10 minutes straight just screaming Fuck park service!!!, fuck them!!! and shit like that but everyone of us would go nuts if we were alone that long

I really wish i could have heard a minute or so of the tape of his death i bet it would be horrific

well anyways i recommend this to anyone who wants something long and interesting to watch
