    COMMENT:
Oh how bottomless the Memory Hole is. Less than a year ago a representative of the Chinese government declared pubicly that China could destroy hundreds of US cities at a moments notice. It was allowed to be forgotten as soon as it was released but the manufactured threat of Iran is being paraded in front of the viewing public non-stop. The Bush Administration and the Media at large have been pushing and inflating the Iran "Nuke" threat when the "nukes" in question are peaceful nuclear reactors for use in supplying affordable energy to the people of Iran.
China is brandishing its biggest guns in our faces and they are ignored. Iran wants to give its people a reliable energy source and we threaten to attack them. There is no evidence that they have any intention of making weapons and they are a front page threat. China has one of the biggest nuclear arsenals in the world and is flaunting it and no one seems to be concerned.
The source of the disconnect is entirely transparent. Iran sits on a strategic resource and is a smaller, easier target which happened to be in the NeoCon's sights from the beginning anyway. Take a look back down the Memory Hole and remember how the "evidence" was created to support a strike on Iraq and you will see the same pattern with Iran. These guys are one trick ponies and we are all bearing witness to their obvious trickery all over again.

A senior Chinese general has warned that his country could destroy hundreds of American cities with nuclear weapons if the two nations clashed over Taiwan.

Major general Zhu Chenghu, a dean at the National Defence University, said he was expressing a private opinion, but his comments, the most inflammatory by a senior government official in 10 years, will fuel growing concerns in Washington about the rise of China.

Speaking at a lecture arranged by the foreign ministry and attended by several foreign correspondents on Thursday, Mr Zhu said China was prepared to initiate non-conventional warfare over Taiwan. "War logic dictates that a weaker power needs to use maximum efforts to defeat a stronger rival," he was reported as saying by the New York Times.

"If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons."

Echoing threats last made in 1995, Mr Zhu, who has a reputation as a hawk in Chinese military circles, said his country was ready to sustain heavy casualties in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other heavily populated areas.

"We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian," he said. "Of course, the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese."

Although Mr Zhu said war was unlikely, his proposal that China should adopt a first-strike nuclear option against the US will alarm the Pentagon.
China tested its first atomic bomb in 1964, but it claims that its arsenal of nuclear weapons is the smallest among the five nations on the UN security council.
According to a recent article in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, China has only 18 intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the US mainland. Most sit in their silos unarmed.

However, US intelligence predicts that over the next 15 years, China will expand its IBM force to 75-100 strategic nuclear warheads targeted primarily at the US. They will be mounted on a new mobile solid-fuel rocket, the Dong Feng-31, and, possibly, miniaturised for launch from China's submarine fleet.

The US defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, recently expressed concern about Beijing's growing military power. Such strategic fears come at a time of rising Sino-American tensions over the bilateral trade deficit and competition for global energy resources.

The Chinese government refused to comment on Mr Zhu's statement, but in recent weeks the state-run media has carried several articles rebutting US claims about a military build-up. Earlier this month, Major General Ding Jiye, head of the finance office of the People's Liberation Army, said the 12.6% rise in defence spending this year was in line with economic growth and was mainly used to improve the living conditions of soldiers.

The China Daily, the English-language paper aimed at an overseas audience, focused on the planned reduction of 200,000 military personnel from the 2.5 million-strong army by the end of this year.

Analysts say China has learned from the collapse of the Soviet Union that it would be economic suicide to attempt an arms race with the US.

But there are still risks of a clash over Taiwan, a self-governing island that China considers part of its territory and the US has vowed to protect.
The president of the European commission, José Manuel Barroso, urged his hosts yesterday to resume dialogue with Taiwan before 2008.

"This will also greatly advance China's international standing and reputation as a global player with a particular responsibility for peace and security in east Asia," said Mr Barroso, who was on his first official trip to China.

It's not a cold war, or any war at all. Zhu Chenghu is simply stating that they are prepared to use nuclear weapons if the United States starts a war with them over Taiwan. I don't agree with the way they run their country, or communism in general, but it's not our problem as long as they don't bother us. They're just too big to do much about.

Iran just wants affordable energy for the people....WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!! Ya know what the difference between China and Iran is? JIHAD, MARTYRDOM!!! While the Chinese value life the Iranians feel that death is just as good. The Chinese also know that as soon as they press a button we'll unleash hell on earth on their lil' asses!

Now why shouldn't we trust the Iranians with nukes???

Good ol' Alex Jones should use some of that video money and buy a jaws of life to extract his head from his ass!

Huge abortion rate in China which is "not quite but almost" forced by the govt. not to mention their problems with child labor, or any labor for that matter. Chinese govt has a long and glorious history of human rights abuses. They easily give the middle eastern whack jobs a run for their money on that issue. And what the hell, let Iran have some nukes. They'll only get one chance to use one, (probably on Israel or Iraq) and then our middle east problems will be over and done with and in a few dozen years, when the radiation levels drop off, we can come in and take all the oil we want. Ok, a little collateral damage... so we get a little excited, overreact and take out Iraq, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Afghanistan, Palestine and the rest of them as well over there...oops...sorry. Minor cockup on the communications front. Bit too much static on the ole wireless. "I could have sworn he said Fire".

Probably pretty much eliminate out little terrorist issue in the process. Bonus!!

Slave Labor: Made in the U.S.A. (Excerpt)
    by William Norman Grigg
    February 6, 2006
    http://www.thenewamerican.com/artman...cle_3116.shtml

Under the influence of disgraced super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, former House Majority Whip Tom DeLay became an apologist for slave labor camps â?? on American soil.

Deep in a humid tropical island jungle, in poorly ventilated buildings ringed with barbed wire and patrolled by armed guards, impoverished Asian women â?? most of them Chinese â?? toil for 80 hours a week making brand-name apparel for export to the United States.

The female garment workers were lured to the labor camps, which are run by members of the Chinese Communist Party, with promises of wages extravagant by their standards, up to 60 percent of what their counterparts in the U.S. earn. But before they were hired, the women had to sign â??shadow contractsâ? that effectively made them slaves to the company. Their activities are strictly regimented, and since they depend on the company store for most of their necessities, what they earn is recycled back into company hands. Furthermore, most of the workers had to borrow huge sums of money, at extortionate rates of interest, to pay, up front, the human traffickers responsible for transporting them to the island.

As is the case wherever the Chinese Communist Party claims jurisdiction, the female garment workers are subject to the regimeâ??s repulsive one-child policy. They are forbidden to marry or have boyfriends. Those who become pregnant are forced to have their children aborted.

Despite being produced from Chinese fabric by Chinese laborers who labor under Chinese law, the designer clothing that emerges from those island factories is labeled â??Made in the USA.â? This is actually a case of truth in labeling, since these Chinese labor camps were established on Saipan, a territorial possession of the United States. Thanks to the efforts of super-lobbyist and confessed felon Jack Abramoff, this squalid arrangement has enjoyed political protection from, and been effusively praised by, many â??conservativeâ? Republican politicians, including disgraced former House GOP leader Tom DeLay.

    GOP Chinagate

The Northern Mariana Islands, a Pacific archipelago located about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to the Philippines, were acquired by the United States from Japan following World War II. Saipan, the largest of the 14 Marianas, serves as capital of the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and the center of its $1 billion garment industry.

During the mid-1990s, Saipan was also a very popular tourist destination for junketeering congressmen, as well as for journalists, analysts for Washington-based think tanks, and other key opinion molders. Many of them were brought to Saipan by Jack Abramoff, who until recently was the King of K Street â?? the boulevard that serves as a staging base for the estimated 50,000 lobbyists infesting our nationâ??s Capitol.

Since Saipan is a tropical white-sand paradise, Abramoff, representing the CNMI, encountered little difficulty persuading influential people to take all-expenses-paid trips to the tropical island. Once there, they were lobbied by the CNMI government and its allies in the garment industry to preserve its unique status under U.S. law. Among the privileges reserved to the commonwealth were the right to set its own immigration policy, exemption from labor and workplace safety regulations, exemptions from tariffs and quotas, and the right to label as â??Made in the USAâ? goods that are manufactured by Chinese workers in factories that are, in effect, pockets of Chinese sovereignty.

â??There is no doubt that trips to the CNMI are one of the most effective ways to build permanent friends on the Hill and among policy makers in Washington,â? boasted Abramoff in a 1998 memo to his associates. Perhaps the most significant of the â??friendsâ? cultivated by Abramoff on behalf of CNMI was former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas). In the company of Abramoff, DeLay spent his 1998 New Yearâ??s vacation on Saipan as a personal guest of Chinese business mogul Tan Siu-lin.

During a lavish New Yearâ??s Eve dinner held in his honor at the beach front Hyatt Regency Hotel, DeLay praised Saipan as â??my Galapagos Island â?¦ a perfect petri dish of capitalism.â? He singled out Froilan Tenorio, at the time the CNMIâ??s governor, praising him for being â??a shining light for what is happening in the Republican Party, and [for representing] everything that is good about what weâ??re trying to do in America, in leading the world in the free market system.â?

While DeLay never distinguished himself as an economist or scholar, itâ??s likely that he understood that selectively exempting politically protected manufacturers from regulations and taxes is corporatism, not free-market capitalism. Itâ??s likewise a safe bet that he understood that a free market is not built on slave labor. And as one of the most conspicuous leaders of the Christian Right, DeLay certainly understood that abortion â?? particularly forced abortion â?? is an abomination. Yet all of these repellent practices thrived in the Saipan â??petri dishâ? that so enchanted DeLay.

Had DeLay and the scores of other congressmen who visited Saipan on junkets been truly interested in deregulation, they would have directed their efforts at freeing up the entire U.S. manufacturing sector, rather than conferring such favors on Saipan alone. The sordid truth revealed in this episode is that the power brokers have corrupted our political system to such an extent that it now operates in many ways like a classic protection racket. By giving the political class a share of the boodle, the CNMI and its corporate allies were able to profit handsomely â?? as was the key influence broker, Jack Abramoff....

You forgot about the AIDS problem in China also. And how the hell is China the Model Country for the UN? How is the US heading in that direction? Or is that what your Prisonplanet is telling you?

    Let the demonizing begin...

"they're powerful, who'd have thought... Quick, let's make sure everyone hates them for no reason!"

Yeah, but nobody should ask the question why the US is the only country "allowed" to have nukes. I don't trust Bush with nukes any more than I trust China or Iran.

As usual, a lot of crap posted by people who have absolutely no knowledge of China except for what they read or hear from our sensationalistic media. Except for Psycho and Flesh that is, the regular voices of reason.

The fuss made over General Zhu's comments is laughable. All he was saying was that if we think we can bomb the shit out of them without any retaliation we are wrong. China is not Iraq or Afghanistan, they are not completely powerless, they won't just sit back while we destroy them. The problem is that China has no way of projecting any conventional force very far beyond it's borders. It has no blue water navy to speak of and can't park a bunch of carriers off our coast. It can't send troops into Mexico or set up air force bases in Canada. Basically they have no other way to fight back, no other deterrent, other than to nuke us. All Zhu was doing was reminding us of that fact. Now I know we're all good flag waving patriots but do we really expect that every other country in the worls should just let us destroy them without a fight??

Psycho is correct, the Chinese do value life. The whole "forced abortion" issue has been blown way out of proportion here in the U.S. and very few people really know what is going on over there. Our media seizes upon a few random stories, from who knows when, and projects that image onto the entire country. Well, here are a few actual facts:

-China does have a one child policy. That is the law and it is well known. Before you disagree with this policy go and spend some time in Shanghai and see what a city with over 14 million people is like, Now imagine if all those people were having 3-4 kids instead of just one.

-Before you get married you have to sign a contract stating that you understand this and will abide by this. So, it's not a surprise to anyone. I, a White American, was married in China and had to sign this form too. Otherwise, I couldn't have gotten married.

-Recently, China has realized that, in a few decades, it will not have enough young people to support its aging population. So now, it has been decided that if a couple is made up of two only children, that couple can have two children.

-China has a large population of "minorities", people who are very similar to the Hill Tribe People of northern Thailand. The Chinese government treats these people the way the U.S. Government should treat our Native Americans. They are largely responsible for determining and enforcing their own laws. These people can have as many children as they want. No restrictions.

    - Actual cases of women being dragged into a clinic and forced to have an abortion are few and far between. 20-25 years ago, when China was just coming out of the Cultural Revolution, this may have been more common but not so much now. China is a big country, however, with a rugged landscape. there are a lot of isolated towns and villages that are run by corrupt politicians with a bit too much gusto for the old days. Modern day cases of forced abortions most likely come from these areas. They are not actually sanctioned by the Chinese Govt itself. I will admit, however, that the Chinese Gov't does tend to look the other way when it happens and this needs to stop.

-In most cases if a woman becomes pregnant with a 2nd child the family must pay a large fine. The fine is an enormous amount for most Chinese and will essentially ruin them. If the woman has an abortion, however, they do not have to pay. Bottom line, whether or not we agree with the law, it is the law and the couple has broken it. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

-And finally...I actually know a couple, friends of my wife from college, who illegally had a 2nd child. The woman was not dragged in for a forced abortion and the baby was not killed as soon as it was born. Instead, they were forced to pay a fine of about US$30K. Fortunately, for them, they are among Shanghai's new wealthy and they just considered the fine to be the cost of the child, like buying a new car.

So yeah, the one child policy is pretty fucked up for those Chinese who want to have more than one child. Enforcement of it is far from perfect and can ruin some people's lives. But it is a far cry from what our media would have us believe. And, given China's massive population, you don't need to stay there very long before you realize that some form of population control isn't such a bad idea.

Again, this needs repeating: Much of what we hear about regarding China from our media is blown way out of proportion. Our media, in order to generate more advertising $, needs news that is sensationalistic. The truth is often boring and boring does not sell. A good Villan sells, however, and right now China is the villan of choice. So, they find isolated incidents and apply them to the whole country, fail to mention the whole story, and spoon feed us bullshit to perpetuate their myths. Just think how we would look to other countries if their media did the same??

Psycho, the Chinese believe in one thing, while the iranians believe in another. what's the difference? I know that death can be quite unpleasant, but do you think that the people who blow their own brains out think that life is just dandy?

It's how you look at it.

I think that this "nuclear war" scenario is just a farce. China would never launch nukes at america. It makes no sense unless they know how to sell green glass as real estate.

Nobody is going to launch nukes anywhere, it's all mumbo jumbo like africanised bees and Y2k.
