$5 is pretty cheap.. does it work well? I got mine from http://floatswitches.net/ works pretty well... i replaced the battery with an old 9v DC cell phone adapter....
I only wanted it so i could keep my res on the same level as my grow buckets (DWC 5 gal buckets) and avoid the gravity fed float valve... with electronics there is no way it can flood...
well - there still is - you need some kind of anti-syphon device... i just punched a hole in my vinyl tubing and stuck a piece of the WD-40 straw (nice and sturdy) in there so that air can fill the tube in the event of negative pressure which would USUALLY make all water surfaces level... ie - flood your grow room.
EDIT: the straw contraption - is INSIDE the res.. near where the water will leave... when the pump is on - a tiny stream of water shoots out - so if you do this, make sure it is over water. (in the res, or control bucket)Marijuana has turned my hamburger of a life into a tasty cheeseburger

I think so... thats how i do it... (if i understand you correctly)
I got a res which i fill up via a sink... when i'm done, i take the same hose that filled it up and plug into the control bucket... (empty grow bucket with switches on it)... if the water level is low, the switches drop - and the pump in the res (rubbermaid trash can) kick on and fill till the switches float, then cut off... water is still flowing to the grow buckets at this time, so when the switches float, it only takes a second for them to drop... then the pump kicks on, and refills it...
2x a day all the water gets pumped back to the res... to mix around, and get even ppm and even temps... (all done by timers)... then refills the system.. its working great.. it was my alternative to building a recirculating system... which i didnt want to mess with on this run... and i may never mess with now.who knows... i might change to E&F this summer... it gets hot as hell here.

I keep wanting to just get trays and fill them with hydroton and clones and run ebb and flo just for the simplicity...

Heh - tru dat... i dont think thats quite as fast a DWC - but this summer, thats what i'm gonna have to set up... its too hot here for DWC - and in E&F the temps dont matter quite as much - just keep the res water moving... and nothing can grow in it...
