Migraines
Hi. I am new here-- but had a couple of questions.....
I have had horrible migraines for years, since I was 12 or 13 and I am now 31. I have taken so many prescriptions it is unreal. Starting almost 3 weeks ago I had a migraine and it hasn't completely stopped yet. I have been having the auras, numbness in hands and faces, the obvious pain, dizziness, etc.
The doctor started me on Topamax (for seizures but used to treat migraines), then antivert for the dizziness. Then prednisone to see if the steriod boost would stop the headaches, still nothing even works.
On a daily basis I take the Topamax as a preventive and when a migraine occurs (at least several times a week) Maxalt as an abortive, and Vicodin every 4 hours.
Last time I was in the doctor, I told him he has got to get this bout of migraines under control or I would try my own methods. I was quite honest with my doctor and told him I have heard it works and I would try if I could get relief. I live in a state that does not allow use for medicial purposes-- he response was simple "just remember that it is illegal and you will get in trouble if caught"
Does anyone use marijuana to control migraines? Do you smoke when you have a migraine to reduce the pain, daily as a preventative. How does it mix with my daily preventative meds---- what if I have a migraine at work take my maxalt (the abortive) and some vicodins and still have the pain (this is common)-- is it too unwise to smoke when I get home?
Thanks for any info you can give.winnieb Reviewed by winnieb on . Migraines Hi. I am new here-- but had a couple of questions..... I don't think that there are any real clinical trials for the treatment of migraine with marijuana, but it seems that it may indeed help treat migraines, and does not seem to cause them. I've had a serious migraine myself and consequntly will never do some things anymore like drink alcohol for fear of a relapse. Check out PubMed and search for cannabis and migraine. Oh, and I'd just try marijuana by itself at first, to see what its pure effects are.

hello winnieb, i would take your migraines in a minute. i get cluster headaches 10x worst than a migraine. this last for 1-2 months everyday sometimes 3-4 times a day. when you catch it you know it . cluster headaches has been linked to so many suidcides. 1 time i caught a cluster and it hurt so bad it gave me a migraine and after the cluster went away the migraine was still there and didnt really bother me. I use Cafergot , hope that helps. really cant help you on getting a perscription for marijuana. lol

I am more concerned with how it will mix with my prescriptions. I am not looking for a script--- even if I had one it would not mean a thing here- possession is possession when the laws aren't in place for medical usage.
Any ideas how it will mix with my daily preventative meds---- and what if i take a vicodin or two at work with no avail, can i go home and smoke--- how does it mix with the vicodins?
thanks!

I hope you find relief...and you should be able to get relief legally! Maybe soon. I don't know about the pills mixing with herb. Did your Dr. say anything about mixing?

most of the time marijuana dose not interact with the other med's and is good for migraines, I would have some one eles around the first time just in case

I was just saying I hope MJ becomes legal soon...for people such as you and millions of others that could benefit. I won't take pain pills so I rely on MJ for just about all my aches and pains so I do hope it becomes legal soon.:stoned: My Mother used to get migraines so severe we would have to take her to the hospital and get a demerol injection..she suffered and didn't have to..so I feel empathy for you very strongly about your migraines.

Smoking weed with vicodin is no big deal. I do it all the time. Now I'm doing it while on morphine and no different effects.
