the funny thing about emo is that folks think that crap just came along. prior to emo you had grunge.......nirvana's teen angst if you will. before that, post modern ruled the sissy whinyboy with makeup scene in the mid to late eighties. think Robert Smith of the Cure. the early eighties had the last bastions of punk rock hanging on and everyone was snorting cocaine and shooting smack. shit, even brian setzer of the stray cats was a junkie. of course, the late seventies had punk rock and new wave. new wave wasn't as dark but contained the seeds of emo. the early seventies had the sensitive songwriter schlock, people like henry gross, bo donaldson and the heywards, and all the shaun cassidy ripoffs. i'm not even gonna elaborate on the sixties as that was pretty much before my time. for the record, Scooterjay dislikes emo music and culture very, very thouroughly!
