Yes, both are correct! Lamborghini did design and style the car.

Even though the M1 achieved great success in the racing circuits, because of it complicated and troubled production process with Lamborghini and the fact that parts of the car were being built all over the place in a handful of different plants, (they were only able to make about 2 cars a week!!!) the BMW execs decided they hated it even before the first one rolled off the production line. Because of this BMW decided to drop their whole mid-engine car line plans and changed the ??M? from meaning ??mid-engine? to ??Motorsport?.

To this day BMW has never made another production mid-engine car.
BaseRSX Reviewed by BaseRSX on . Car Quiz #1 BMW has had the "Motorsport" division for more than 30 years. This is their premium line of cars most famous today is the M3. Their first M car was the M1 which was actually designed by another auto company, not BMW. Just the engine in the M1 was designed and built by BMW. What car company designed the M1 and what did the "M" originally stand for before BMW changed it to "Motorsport"? Rating: 5
