Their first M car was the M1 which was actually designed by another auto company, not BMW. Just the engine in the M1 was designed and built by BMW. True. Lotus is a kick-ass engineering company.

They designs/engineered the 1990's Bugatti safety systems (ABS, airbags, etc.)

Who owns Lotus now... isn't it Petronas? The F1 company that has petroleum companies and stuff?

Lotus is now owned by Proton headquartered in Malaysia.

Also its ironic that they designed the Z1 engine because their more recent cars use engines from other companies. Like the Elise/Exige comes with a Rover/Ford engine in europe and a Toyota engine in North America.
