the judge's authority is to follow the constitution. 'being racist' isn't a crime, threatening violence is a different thing. i hope we're going after the black racists who call white people racist names, and obviously don't like white people.

i think the cab driver, who obviously can't speak english properly, should be sent to a mostly white, suburban high school english class by a white judge. maybe we could do 8th grade...but i wouldn't want to insult him.

Racist Man Sentenced To Attend Black Church

CINCINNATI -- A judge has sentenced a suburban Cincinnati man to attend services for six weeks at a black church for threatening to punch a black cab driver and using racial slurs.

Judge William Mallory Jr. told 36-year-old Brett Haines, "It seems readily apparent to me that you don't like black people. That's OK with me. But you have to understand that you are at the whim and authority of a black judge."

Mallory let Haines choose between attending the black church for six Sundays or spending 30 days in jail. Haines said he'd try the church, although he doesn't usually worship on Sunday.

Mallory offered Haines the choice Friday after Haines was convicted of disorderly conduct. He was arrested in November after threatening cab driver David Wilson and Wilson's wife.

Mallory said he was concerned about maintaining the separation between church and state, so the judge asked Haines whether the option would offend him.

Haines said he would like to try it.

The cab driver said he wished Haines had been jailed instead because, in his words, "Church don't change everybody."

So... according to your logic: broken english should be a punishable crime on the level of a violent threat. Maybe you should be sentenced to take remedial philosophy with basic mathematics.

But I wouldn't want to insult you.

The hair-trigger fear of 'reverse racism' is usually unwarranted and you provide an excellent example. You'd have a more substantial point to make on the subject of church/state separation.

What you're missing is context. The white judge does not have to say that as it's understood. I don't necessarily think his words were wisely chosen, but what he was essentially expressing was that his place of authority is a sign of social change as is the unacceptability of violent racial threats.

Look, this man in Cinncinnati may be a racist, but he's in need of anger management or other therapy - not a field trip in sociology. That judge is an example of somebody that's making things worse - and I'm NOT singling him out because he's black, as there are many more white judges that are even less competent. I'll lay you odds ten to one that he's a religous nut, and he would point out, in private, biblical stories and verses that he relies on for inspiration in his "judgements". It's no accident that he chose to send the guy to a church. :thumbsup:
