For a space that size you might want to read up on using a bunch of those swirly 100 watt light bulbs. I use both, 400 watt hps's and the swirly bulbs. If you use enough of the bulbs your plants will grow well and you won't have as much trouble dealing with heat from the hps lamps and ballast. Mind you, I'm no expert on these bulbs, but they're reveging some that were harvested a month ago. They like the bulbs... The new babies love them too... I just don't know about flowering, so like I say, read up on them...

this is kinda bothering me, becase my friend is gonna be the one how pays the most for the system and stuff, and i know if i sit there and say hey help me dish out $200 for a light system, i know he just gonna say fuck it, so i guess i am pretty much stuck with the damn 400W system in less some one knows a nother place that sells cheap better sets then the 400 one...

I'm building a grow room, too. I plan on using a 1000 watt hps for flowering 10 plants, and like you, I really don't have the money, so I'll be building mine over a few months.
I think it will be worth the wait in the end.
Good luck on that 400 watt deal, bro!
Let me know how it pans out . . .

Yeah I have a 400w MH/HPS I mean its a good lighting system I'm having pretty good results I know the 1000w would be better but I wouldve had double the problem with the heat with that 1000w system. I wouldnt buy one untill I figure how to keep it nice and cool

If you are still going to get a 4x4 room, I would NOT recomend a HPS.. Get a bigger room, and voiala!
Presto HPS'o Weed'o!!
Or, how TALL are you making you're room?`

If you have to choose between a 250 watt conversion bulb, HPS + MH or a 400 watt hps,
go with the 400watt hps
if you are going to grow 10 plants you need to keep them short.
a 400 watt bulb does not have much penetration and with so many plants in a small area, it will further reduce your penetration.
You are best flowering your plants at about 12 inches. You can grow them to 12 inches.. clone them and then let them get 12 inches again..
are you starting from seed?
get a fan and have it blow between your plants and the light... and keep that 400 watt bulb as close as you can without burning your plants...
no farther than 10 inches during flowering..... less than 6 inches is ideal..
this will give you greater penetration and THICKER HEAVIER buds..
1000 watt is "better".. but electricty costs in the USA have sky rocketed..
it is ok to start with a 400
