I guess saying something is indescribable is like defining it more than describing it. Like saying that object X is a laptop, as opposed to saying it's silver and black with an x-inch screen, a keyboard, a touch pad etc...

And roads wind because sometimes they can't be built on certain areas of land (as stated above) sometimes it's cheaper to build on x land as opposed to y land, sometimes they have to work around existing objects like mountains / buildings and of course, roads don't just go from a to b; they wind so that they go through c, d and e as well, or at least come close enough to have a smaller road branching off and heading for c, d or e.

Alot of modern citys which have been designed around the car do have straight roads. They tend to be based on a grid design to ease traffic flow but most citys which have just been built up over time tend not to.

I agree with Pablo...these are kind of dumb questions...kinda like "if we call then fingers, how come they never fing?"

I seriously hope you were joking, but assume you were not...Roads are not straight for several reasons....
    1. You cant pave through everything - there are many things that haver to be avoided when paving roads such as forest, bodies of water, mountains ...the list goes on

    2. A whole bunch of straight roads instead of a few winding and reconnecting roads would be alot more work...

3...4...5...6...7...8 ..well im not going to keep posting though Im sure others will, because there are several other reason..if you really cant figure it out... I can tell you some more

also very true...for modern cities that our planned they can pre-clear the whole land area ....so they would be able to have straight roads as he says...

Actually it was the Romans who you should credit for straight roads. They would build straight roads so they could march the shortest route. If you've ever driven on one it's pretty amazing--meticulously straight for miles and miles. They're scattered about Europe.

    No joke.
