The idea is getting one of those good, shiny (most likely aluminum) pens and jamming the pointed end backwards into the tip, removing the guts, and using a twist-tie in a wad as a gnarly screen. That screen does 80% of the talkign here, making a very nice mixture of air. I just tried that on my pipe and as of now I'm fairly stoned. Just a few minutes have passed.

The bowl/screen combo is key.

It could just be that the weed left on your table had a lot of kief in it from all the bud you'd broken up, making for a higher level of THC.

Also, joints tend to be inefficient when smoking solo, so you may not be smoking quite so much as you think you are each time you smoke a J.

The kief is an excellent point. I didn't consider that. However, even without the kief, a single load still ****s me up.

Yes, unless the pointed end is supposed to be your illustration of the cone. The cone should be on the end with the weed and screen on it. (As it actually CONTAINS the weed and the screen)
