Lime and Ammonium Nitrate a No No!??
I don't use dolomite lime but I do have ammonium nitrate in my ferts.
I read somewhere that the ammonium nitrate will interact with lime and produce toxic ammonia gases also making the nitrate unavailable to the plant.
I'm raising this as a possible problem for the pro's to confirm as I could imagine a lot of soil growers would use these ingredients.

Lime and Ammonium Nitrate a No No!??
Lime contains Calcium - Ammonium Nitrate is pure nitrogen. These two substances when added dry to one another form a chemical bond with is very difficult to break. This is why when you buy your 20-20-20 in all cases it is void of Calcium. When you add these two together in bulk and then add them to water they form hard clumps which float to the bottom of your bucket and will remain there. In order for plants to use elements they must be insolution. As far as toxicity goes if you put these two together in their dry form the result would be toxic. However if you mix the right amount of each in two different five gallon buckets. Ca in one bucket, N in another bucket and then poured both into a 10 gallon bucket this would be fine.

Lime and Ammonium Nitrate a No No!??
Lime is an acid base and pure nitrogen and acid don't play well together. They can produce heat that may burn small roots. As well as some other results your plant may not like.
But in truth I have never tried growing pot with pure nitrogen in the dirt. One of the things Nitrogen does in dirt is to soften it up so roots can move around easer and find water. When I have ever used it was on my lawn after I aerated the yard but every time i just added water period.
That is a cocktail I would never use but this is one area I must admit I am not as strong as others.

Lime and Ammonium Nitrate a No No!??
Zandor I thought lime was an alkaline base in fact is not the word "base" alkaline. There is no such thing as an acid / base the terms are opposite. I guess it does not matter as all of the above is basically right - no pun intended -

Lime and Ammonium Nitrate a No No!??
Is lime not a citrus? Is citrus not a type of acid?
I may be wrong I did not research it just used what I though was common since and what I thought I remembered from school many, many years ago.
As for base I was speaking of the dominant compound found in line juice and I think that is an acid compound of some type.
But thanks for correcting me and clearing this up.

Lime and Ammonium Nitrate a No No!??
Lime (calcium carbonate) in this case is a mineral with a PH of around 8.4. Lime juice is acid yes. Bases are alkaline (PH above 7.0) and acids are acid (PH below 7.0).
Thank you I am just enjoying your message board.
